Nationalism is defined as both an idea and a movement that holds the concept of a nation being congruent to the state. This ideology is a way to promote the nation so that the nation can gain sovereignty. Nationalism has the potential to either weaken or strengthen the nation. As nationalism was spreading in Europe, specifically in the east, it started to “destabilize different empires” which were the Ottoman and Hapsburg. Nationalism has impacted the spread of communism to the point that the Soviet Union was a strong independent nation. Although nationalism helped Eastern European nations, there were some nations that didn’t have any “social protection” and the economy kept crashing. These challenges usually happened in central-modern nation-states when they were expanding on capitalism. One of the benefits of having nationalism in a country is bonding people together without having any certain connections with one another. It’s like having “imagined communities” because the point is to create unity and loyalty in people’s minds. Another important reason is to share similar “cultural symbols like flags, national anthems, and a shared idea of the history of the nation” in order to construct the “imagined community”.

However, nationalism in dependent and weak nations can undermine communism. Nationalism definitely has the help to increase or weaken many countries. As nationalism expanded across Eastern Europe, it began to disrupt many empires, including the Hapsburg and Ottoman. The benefits that was provided was that Nationalism led to the growth of more democratic ideas. Nationalism can create a spirit of patriotism. Patriotism means a love of one's country. It can also help form cultural ties and It has the potential to motivate individuals to collaborate and make sacrifices for others. In the late 1860s, nationalism played a role in bringing Italians together to struggle for freedom from Austrian authority as that being said these people really wanted there freedom they where willing to fight in give up anything they had for it. Nationalism created Much of the process of forming a nation is building togetherness and respect in our minds. To develop and build a community of a nation, we need shared cultural symbols like flags, national anthems, and a shared understanding of our nations' past.
