With the defeat of Napoleon and the end of the Napoleonic War in 1814, a new diplomatic movement emerged that focused on maintaining peace in Europe.  What was the political mindset of the members of the Quadruple Alliance?  What new alliances were formed and how did they attempt to maintain peace in Europe after 1815?

After the defeat of napoleon, the quadruple alliance conformed by the countries of Prussia, Russia, Austria and Great Britain were trying to find different ways and agreements to maintain the peace between the countries. But also keeping an eye and to hold France in line because it was their first concern and enemy to be taken into account and having strong defensive measures against them. Also countries as Belgium and Low Countries joined this alliance to help controlling France more effectively.

Some agreements to maintain the peace were: the treaty of Paris, agreement in which was stablished the finished of the war between France and the quadruple alliance. The agreements of this treaty were favorable and less severs with France, this allowed France to regain most of the colonies they lost in war. And the congress of Vienna that was “a meeting of the quadruple alliance, restoration France and smaller European states to fashion a general peace settlement after the defeat of napoleons France”

Even when all the countries were looking for peace, they also wanted their own benefit and this benefits were in form of territory as a way of compensation for all the struggle they have to put in the contention of France.

As the Napoleonic Wars were ending in 1814, the “Great Powers of Europe” started planning for the postwar world. These great powers of Europe included Great Britain, Prussia, Russia, and Austria. Obtaining such great powers, a sovereign state must possess “military and economic strength”, as well as “diplomatic and soft power influence”. Great Britain, Prussia, Russia, and Austria formed an alliance called the “Quadruple Alliance”. The allied powers were concerned about defeating their greatest enemy who was France and offered France lenient terms after Napoleon took power. After they agreed, they signed and formed the first Treaty of Paris in order to restore the Bourbon King to the French throne, restoring what France possessed back in 1782, and not paying for war reparations. The Quadruple Alliance combined “leniency with strong defensive measures” in order to create different barriers with other European countries such as Belgium and Holland, especially having the French rebuild their aggression. In 1815, the Congress of Vienna was formed and ended the Napoleonic world in order to attempt to restore the monarchies Napoleon dissolved. The Congress had elite representatives who came together to “formulate treaties instead of relying on several capitals”. These elite representatives included Tsar Alexander I of Russia, King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, Emperor Franz II of Austria, and their foreign ministers in order to meet the “fashion of peace” after Napoleon defeated France.
