1. Samantha: I believe it is very important to properly terminate a therapeutic relationship; especially if it is done before the outcome and end goals have been reached. If done when it is supposed to be done, then it may not be as hard on the patient, they know it is coming and steps have been put into place to help. If termination is done before the patient is ready, then things could become complicated; especially if the patient is relying heavily on their therapist and the help they are getting. Some problems that may arise are if the patient starts to have feelings for their therapist, if there is a conflict of interest, or it could be just as simple as the therapist having to move away or quit work. When my son's therapist had her baby, she could no longer work at the location she was giving him treatment in; we had to slowly transition him to another therapist, with his previous therapist overseeing sessions, that he would feel comfortable with. This is not always an option, but it worked fine for our situation.
