Discussion Board 4 - H. pylori
1. Rachel Mullican
H. pylori is a bacteria that resides in the GI tract. It can damage the tissues in one's stomach and small intestine. It can cause very painful ulcers, stomach cancers, iron deficiency anemia, and skin rashes. On the other hand, H. Pylori has been found to be helpful in some ways. It is said that a child's GI tract is populated with H. pylori can helo fight asthma and allergies. Another study says there is a correlation between H. pylori helping gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is said that H. pylori help reduce the acidity of gastric juices reducing gastroesophageal reflux. Lastly, there are studies that show H. pylori can reduce one's chances to become overweight or obese. The studies show that stomachs that contain H. pylori lack the hormone ghrelin. Ghrelin stimulates the hypothalamus which if it has less of this hormone, it can cause someone to become overweight. Between all 3 of these diseases that H. pylori are protecting children, many scientists are still unsure. Overall, most of these studies focus on children and when adults contain h. pylori, it can be much more serious. This is because when we age, this infection can cause more risk and threat to our bodies.

I feel like this article was kind of confusing for me but I do believe that the same germ that can get us sick can also keep us well it honestly just depends on the person I feel like. There is similarly persuading proof that obliterating H. pylori could modify digestion in manners that expansion the danger of heftiness. A few examination gatherings, including Blaser's, have discovered a solid relationship in people between the bacterium and two stomach chemicals, ghrelin and leptin, the two of which assume focal parts in directing our cravings. In the same way as other chemicals, they fill in as a group, advising us to eat when we are eager and stop when we are full. The more ghrelin you have in your circulatory system, the almost certain you are to gorge. Leptin capacities in a contrary manner, smothering the hunger and expanding energy levels. For individuals whose stomachs are contaminated with H. pylori, ghrelin got undeniably less discernible after a feast. For the others, levels of the chemical stayed high, and the impacts are apparent. "An age of children are growing up without H. pylori controlling their degrees of ghrelin,'' Blaser advised me. These outcomes recommend that the message to quit eating never makes it to the cerebrum. On the off chance that those chemicals aren't controlled, it gets undeniably more hard to control one's weight. Everyone is different so you never know what's going to happen.

I find it interesting that doctors have been trying to reduce the amount of prescribed antibiotics for kids, but in truth I feel like it's impossible not to at least have one dose of antibiotics. But in truth the doctors after doing research have figured out how to help our bodies and the healing process without the excessive use of medication that could have possible side effects.
I also found it interesting that the "colonization of the GI tract with H. pylori" can protect certain diseases that children have or grow up and develop later. Asthma I found to be cool and the research behind it was interesting as for research behind being overweight and obesity. It's crazy that something so small can have such a big cause and effect on its host, which is us. It's so cool to learn about how H. pylori isn't harmful to kids at a young age but when we get older it can cause us issues. I'm intrigued to learn more about H. pylori and if they're conducting research to see how and why H. pylori is so harmless at a young age but is potentially harmful at an older age. And hopefully we can find answers to questions that we are always asking.
Example: Lindsay,
I thought it was also interesting they are trying to reduce the amount of antibiotics they give kids, but i also think that will be hard because kids get sick and you have to give them medication to feel better so i honestly don't know how this will work out.
