WEEK 1 - Part I: Building the Foundation of Research

Class Participation - Discussion Forum – Introduction This is a two-part Assignment.  

Learners are expected to have weekly interaction with the Faculty Mentor as well as with other Learners through class participation in course Discussion assignments.  Learners must post to each Discussion assignment at least  twice each week as follows:

  Part 1:  Activity 14 of this course requires you to submit the completion report for the CITI “Doctoral Studies” course.  The first part of this discussion forum you are to create an account at CITI in order to accomplish the “Doctoral Students” course (Activity 14 is pasted below for reference).  You should start working on this now in order to have the “Doctoral Students” course completed by Activity 14.   

1. In the discussion forum let your mentor know you created the account

2. Identify any barriers you feel will keep you from completing this training by the end of the course.

  Part 2:  The second part of Week One’s Class Participation Activity is to introduce yourself to your faculty mentor and to your classmates.  Your introduction should contain the following information:  

1. One or two paragraphs about yourself, including your work history and what you are currently doing.

2. A general statement of your present knowledge and experience with this subject.

3. Present the objectives that you personally wish to accomplish in this course.

  Activity 14 CITI Assignment (for reference regarding part 1 above)   As you near the end of the course work in the doctoral program you need to prepare for the next phase of the program.  In the project phase of the program you will be conducting original research on a current business problem.  Prior to collecting data for your research you will need to receive approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB).  The IRB ensures your research will be conducted ethically and do no harm to your research subjects.  To ensure you have a thorough and complete understanding of ethical research you are to complete the Doctoral Students course offered by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative’s (CITI) website at:  https://www.citiprogram.org/index.cfm?pageID=154&icat=0&clear=1Links to an external site. .  Click on this link then create an account with CITI using California Southern University as you institution.    Once you have the account created select “Add a Course” then select the “Doctoral Students” course.  Complete all modules of the Doctoral Students course then print out your completion report and upload it to Activity 18 in your Learner portal indicating you have completed the course.   

Week 2 (Current News and Event)

Each Learner will prepare a short discussion of a current event article on an issue in Business or Business Management that is related to the objectives of the course. Your class participation assignment is to select the news item and discuss it with the class via the Class Participation Forum. Discuss a news item or event that has arisen within the past month that has relevance to this course. Include the following: o Topic o Date o Source which may include, radio, television, newspaper, internet, etc. o Summary of the news item o Conclusions or commentary about relevance to the content of this course

Week 3 (Survey Instrument)

We need to communicate with people about various topics. In research we can communicate with participants through the use of surveys. In research, this is referred to as a survey instrument. Using your textbook, journals, and the Internet, determine  what constitutes a good design for a survey instrument. Keep in mind that the survey instrument can be designed a variety of ways and as such, is dependent on the type of research that is being conducted, the questions being asked, and of course the type of participants that will be responding to the survey. Discuss

Please review the Class Participation Policy located in the Course Essentials section of the syllabus for this course.  Learners are expected to have weekly interaction with the Faculty Mentor as well as with other Learners through class participation in the Class Discussion Forum.  Learners must post to the Course Discussion Forum at least once each week.  The post should be a direct response to the topic for the week and include brief commentary on the posts of other classmates. Your post must be substantial and thoughtful and be a minimum of 250 words.  It is recommended that you write your post in Word to track your word count and then copy and paste it into the discussion forum space in the course syllabus.

Select a website that has relevance to this course and provide an informal web critique that includes a summary of the content provided on the website, your interpretation of the strengths and limitations of the site as well as how this information integrates into the coursework.

When research is completed, the results need to be interpreted, summarized, and displayed. It is important that the data being summarized is clear and lucid, so that members of the audience can appreciate the meaning of the data. There are several ways to summarize and present data (graphical representation of data summarized is common). Using the textbook, journals, and the Internet, develop an understanding of how research data and results are summarized and presented. Is their an advantage to a particular way? Discuss
