After reading Dr. Padron’s story I found many motivational factors in his narrative, the first being how he transformed a two-year college into one of the largest institutions in the country. Offering countless degrees at a more affordable price, he became a motivational beacon for immigrant students. I learned that he arrived to America through a program allowing children to seek better opportunities and flee a communistic system. Doing this without parents is already extremely hard. However, he managed to do it all while studying and working 3-4 jobs to assist himself and his brother with their expenses. I was also moved by the fact that he didn’t know the language when he first arrived, being an ESOL student myself I know the struggle of being in a classroom that is taught in a foreign language. This set back did not stop him from his future successes. Padron was told by his counselors that he wasn’t college material, instead of letting these opinions influence his future decisions Pardon decided to look past the feelings of others and continue to flight for his higher education. This impacted me because it shows how many obstacles and hardships Dr. Padron had to go through but because he stuck to his goals he was able to become the president of a redefined community college.

Three motivational strategies I learned after reading this week’s chapter are setting SMART goals to evaluate your progress efficiently and creating an action plan on the steps it takes to achieve your goals. Writing down your goals is another big factor. Using statements like “I will” instead of “I can” or “I might” sets a tone on the achievement process. This all ties back into the last motivational strategy being attitude. Keeping a positive attitude when creating and achieving goals is key to staying passionate on why you are doing what you do to reach the final objective. Three time-management strategies would be setting a specific time to study, making sure you set extra time to study even if you don’t need it, and managing yourself on what it is you want to achieve. I plan on implementing these strategies by creating my own action plan and creating smaller goals to get to my long-term ones. This will keep me motivated and passionate on my original purpose.

After watching the “How to Set SMART Goals” video I can confidently say that using this method is the first step to focusing and achieving your goals. I will be using this method to plan out how I will successfully maintain straight A’s this semester without feeling overwhelmed or overworked. Writing down my specific goal, being to keep straight A’s is the first step. Then I will measure out how I will meet this goal. To do this, I need to plan out my week’s schedule and find a specific and sufficient time to complete my homework assignments. After that I will make sure my goal is attainable and that the work I am putting in is relevant to what I want to achieve. For example, I need to make sure that making a schedule and learning new study habits is benefiting me in working towards my goals instead of delaying my results. Lastly, I will set a time frame on my goal. I could say that by the middle of the semester I need to have at least  B or higher to end up with an A as my overall grade. By the year 2022, I will graduate from Miami Dade College with an Associates Degree in Business with at least a 3.5 GPA or higher. After graduating, I will enter a four-year university to further my education in business and architecture. To achieve this goal, I will use the SMART method to put my aspirations into effect. I will get specific with my goals and know exactly which university I want to attend. I will make sure this goal is measurable by creating smaller ones in the meantime that will help me achieve my long-term ones. By this I mean creating a MAP with my advisor, becoming more educated on what it takes to transfer, and knowing exactly what credits I need to be able to make that change. I will also use time-bound to conjure up a set schedule to know when I am meeting with my advisor, what steps I need to take, and how long it should take me to complete all these credits.
