How to Evaluate Research Sources (CARS model)
Is your source credible, accurate, reasonable, and supported?
The CARS Checklist
1. Credibility
your source should be authoritative (you should see evidence that allows you to trust it)
check the author’s credentials
there should be evidence of quality control (e.g. peer review)
2. Accuracy
your source needs to be up to date
facts should be complete, not partial
your source should provide the whole picture, not an incomplete picture of the real situation
3. Reasonableness
your source needs to show evidence that it is fair, objective, and does not have a conflict of interest
there should be no logical fallacies, biased tone, or obvious slant
4. Support
your source needs to be supported by other sources
the author needs to be clear and upfront about where information came from
