INTRODUCTION

Cultural intelligence (CQ) is a person’s ability to function effectively in a diversity of cultural circumstance whether domestically or intentionally. In all our cultures we have the idea of what is going on around us since we have a wealth of information most of which is in our subconscious minds thus helping us make sense of what we observe and experience. When we interact with people from different cultural background, the same prompts may have an entirely different meaning. Personal cultural intelligence has helped me to handle cultural diversity: the set of skills, abilities and knowledge needed to understand, recognize and adjust to changes in the culture. Through personal cultural intelligence training I can now critically scrutinize the meaning of my culture system and how it has influenced my assumptions, expectations and interpretations. This has helped a great deal in coming to acceptance that of the validity of the different world views. With high cultural intelligence we get a more comprehensive and inclusive manner of looking at the world. One becomes more accepting and less defensive to new ideas. We become more open to new ideas, relationships and perspectives. When we get released from the restrains of a particular worldview we open up to new contingencies and our lives are enriched.

DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Present challenges

Communication is one of the intercultural issues am facing because people at my work place tend to use different languages for communication. This brings about confusion and misunderstanding. Such languages should be used over lunch breaks but not during working hours where only formal languages should be used. According to David Livermore, “cultural intelligence is more than just cultural awareness and sensitivity which are vital within a corporation; it is the ability to relate to culturally diverse situations as well as work effectively in them” (A. 2010) People that people with high levels of cultural intelligence have a better chance to achieve their goals in a more effective and respectful manner no matter the context of their culture. A workplace can have cultural diversity but people working there cannot forget that all perceptual experiences are similar and this can result in misunderstandings among the work employees due to the unhealthy relationships at the place of work. (A. 2010)

Future opportunities

As a global leader I will require to improve my cultural intelligence. This is because I will be faced with uncertain and complex situations as a leader. Cultural intelligence can be enhanced both broadly and individually and this ends up making the most of the benefits on offer. Enhancement of cultural intelligence takes time but it is worth the investment since it boosts the reputation of a company. With CQ I will be able to improve and speed up problem solving and decision making skills. The most essential benefit is that it adds a competitive edge to a business and an organization. This is achieved because cultural intelligence helps improve cooperation, teamwork, communication and performance. David Livermore points out that cross-cultural skill are the most vital capabilities so as to remain competitive in a business (A. 2010). CQ is paramount for quality of service, worker efficiency and constitutes to important interpersonal association between employees as well as business and clients.

Your CQ

I am a person that is able to deal with a team and with myself as well. On cultural values I rate myself as one who can put up with other peoples cultural values. I also have capabilities in which I can share along with other people as a team.

Strongest CQ capability

CQ Action is the extent in which I can act appropriately in multicultural situations. Positive changes have been experienced in the company in the last 6 months. Therefore, greater amount of resources, talent and knowledge offering an active working approach that is not moved to one position. Developing cultural intelligence helps get a better understanding of the different cultures thus enabling me to have better relationships with other employees at work who are from different cultures. I get a deep view in the manner in which various cultures operate in business hence developing behaviours and language making it much easier to solve problems.

Weakest capability

The CQ Knowledge helps in understanding the similarities and differences in cultures. Over the past 6 months I have not been able to understand the important behaviours and culture values of those I work with. An instance is when I invited a workmate for some drinks. I bought all the rounds and become irritated that the same was not reciprocated. The following day at work I asked for a report that wasn’t brought on time. I thought of how this guy was unreliable, unprofessional and also tight with his money. (clementin 2017)

ACTION PLAN

Over the next one year am looking toward improving on leading a multicultural team and be able to overcome all the challenges that may come with it.

STRENGTH –CQ ACTION

Setting goals

Thinking big

Leaving no stone unturned

Brain power.

AREA FOR IMPROVEMENT-CQ KNOWLEDGE

Choosing a culture that interests me and reading a novel or a magazine from an oversee site.

Visiting culturally important places so as to learn about them

Continuously observing body language and facial expressions when interacting with people from different cultures.

Asking questions about the other people’s culture so I can be in the know.

In conclusion I am going to share my action plan with my friends who are going to help me implement my plan. They are going to be checking up on my progress to be sure I am on the right track as well as helping me with my projects.
