I. Thesis/Opening:

A. Use a Statistic:

1. Right now, about 800 million people are surviving off of a dollar a day.

2. Thesis Statement: Students should purchase fair trade certified items

since it ensures the product was crafted under fair and ethical working

conditions and helps the local community from where it was exported.

II. Point 1: What is fair trade and why should I care?

A. Fair trade is a global movement connecting every part of trade to help the

planet and people.

1. The U.S. consumes almost 30% of the world’s resources when we only

have 5% of the population (Fair Trade USA). Imagine the change we can

make when we each shop more consciously.

III. Point 2: What does Fair Trade do for those in need?:

A. Ensures child labor is not used in the production of goods.

B. Protects women in the workplace.

C. Gives farmers the tools they need to create a successful business and become

independent.

D. Pays workers a fair salary and raises the standard of living for them.

1) Empowers their community and balances their economy, helping to end the

cycle of poverty.

E. Gives alternative, sustainable exports like artisan hand crafts to a community to

get them away from drug trades and other harmful practices.
