Research Question

How does stress at home affect the academic performance of teenagers?

Hypothesis

The more a teenager is stressed at home, the higher the likelihood that he/she will perform poorly at school.

Key Variables

The independent variable is stress. The dependent variable is academic performance. In this context, the academic performance will vary depending on the teenager’s stress levels. Therefore, the academic performance will be dependent on the stress level. Regarding the operationalization of the variables, stress will be measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The PSS is “a measure of the degree to which situations in one’s life are appraised or stressful” (Lee & Jeong, 2019). Academic performance will be measured using the grade point average of the teenagers.

Ethical Issues

There are certain ethical issues that arise when studying this topic. One of them is getting the consent of the study participants. Since the participants are teenagers, their parents/ guardians will have to be looped in o that they make the final decision regarding the participation of the teenagers. Another issue is that of privacy. The personal information of the teenagers will have to be kept private away from third parties. Consequently, the researcher will have to comprehensively educate the teenagers and their parents/ guardians regarding the importance of the study, its objectives, and any other pertinent information. This will ensure they make an informed decision whether or not to participate in the study.
