On this page you will have your running head, at the top of the page, note that it must include the words Running head: as written, followed by a shorter version of your title, usually three or four words (less than 50 characters long), this running head must be in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS as shown, the title has every significant word capitalized.

Next centered above the middle of the page is the Assignment Title, this is a title of your choosing but it MUST refer in some way to the subject matter, but should not just be a copy of the title of the original article.

Following the title leave everything as is, except Name of Student, and your class and section numbers, put your information in the spaces. Delete all this red instruction material, and go to page 2.

Introduction

In the research proposal, you present some background information about the research paper that you will be critiquing. Included in this proposal will be the subject matter of the original research, the methods, and the results, as well as discussing why the research is important. It is not enough to say it is important, you must describe why. This paper will be minimally one full page in length with a half page on the introduction, and a half page on the problem statement. The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the quality of a previously published article.

Problem Statement

Here you should state the problem as you believe it exists, all of your information should be supported by research. You must clearly state what the problem is that you will be examining in your term paper. Include three specific objectives that you hope to get out of the project, this will help you in developing your paper. You should have at least 3 to 5 primary, researched based references. The entire paper must be written in APA style. Use the same font throughout follow the template for style, capitalization, and references. You should proof the paper carefully for spelling and grammar as your paper should be well written.

You must cite your sources in your paper, by using either parenthetical or contextual citations. Borden, Richardson, and Meyer (2012) is an example of a contextual citation. A parenthetical citation would look like this (Borden, Richardson, & Meyer, 2012). Every article listed on your reference page, must be cited in your paper, and every citation in your paper must have a reference entry.

COMMENTS:

Please note that the citations listed above are examples of how to write a reference. You should pay attention to the information included, capitalization, and particularly the order of information.

If you cite an author in your text (and you must do this a lot), that is a way of saying you read that article in preparation to write yours, if you did not read it, do not cite it, You may say, as an example, Boulard (2006) cited previous work which said… but you would not cite the authors Boulard did unless you actually read those articles.

Do not include the name of the article, or the authors first name or initials in your paper, to prevent gender bias, in scientific writings authors are referred to by last name only, the only exception is famous people such as Sigmund Freud or Abraham Lincoln, but authors are cited by last name only.

Hanging indentations are required on references: to get a hanging indentation, select the text of the reference, right click, select paragraph, under special using the drop down arrow select hanging, and make sure 0.5” appears in the box to the right.

References should include all authors’ names Last name, first initial, last name, first initial, & last name, first initial – the year of publication in parentheses, the title in sentence style capitalization, the journal title with all significant words capitalized and in italics, and the volume, issue, and page numbers as shown and the doi if available. Do not use abbreviations for the name of the journal or vol. or issue, or pp. etc. do it as shown in the template.
