Research Project Guidelines ARTF 100
The final project of the course, a virtual art gallery, will consist of 10 written blurbs (250–350 words each) about works of visual art from prehistoric to modern times. You will be able to choose the 10 works of art from any artistic movements, time periods or traditions. But you may not repeat any time periods. For example, if you pick a work of art from the Cubist time period, then you would not be allowed to select another Cubist artwork for the assignment. Even though you may choose any images, you will be asked to have a theme for your project. For example, you might choose to show how the human form has been represented in art over time.
Your final project may be submitted in any form (subject to instructor approval), e.g., a Microsoft Word document, short book, website, exhibition, Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, narrated film, etc.
In summary, regardless of its final form, your finished project will include:
· 10 articles (250–350 words each) each discussing an artwork from an era studied
· Each article will include the following:
· Images
· Citations
· A brief description of the work (including the formal elements and medium)
· An explanation of the work’s function
· Cultural context and meaning
Throughout the semester, you will be asked to complete:
· A project proposal
· An Outline/Reference sheet
· Rough Draft
· Final Copy
THE PAPER PROPOSAL
On Canvas, you will submit a very short proposal where you tell me what theme you plan to use for your project. Your theme can be a subject matter (like still lifes, landscapes, the human body, tacos, etc.). Or your theme could be something more abstract (devotion to deity, propaganda, hard work, etc.).
Your proposal will only be a sentence or two. I want you to start with something concrete to direct your selection of artworks.
You don’t need to tell me anything in the proposal other than what the theme will be. However, when selecting your works of art, please use scholarly resources. I would suggest museum websites like these below for picking your works:
Or databases on the Library Website like Oxford Art Online (http://www.sdmiramar.edu/library/databases)
The Outline/Sources Sheet
The Outline:
You will also be asked to write up a rough outline of your project, to give me a better idea of where you will be going with the virtual art gallery. In that, I would ask that you expand on the basic requirements for the assignment:
· Intro Paragraph, with thesis statement from your paper proposal
· List of the 10 works of art you plan to use
· Title, Artist (if known), Date, Medium, Size, etc. listed
· An explanation of how you plan to create the project—what it will look like
· Works Cited
Sources:
You will provide for me a list of potential sources you will be using for your paper. These should come from the library databases. You must follow these guidelines for the references:
· 1 reference should be a print book. The rest can be online resources (meaning from the library databases…not websites you find on Google)
· Include full citations for each resource—either MLA or APA format
Paraphrased quote:
I will also ask that you provide for me in this assignment, one quote from one of your resources. You will copy and paste the quote directly onto the sheet provided in Canvas. Below that, you will paraphrase the quote and get it into your own words. The purpose of this is to give you some practice paraphrasing the things you read while doing research instead of simply copying/pasting.
Rough Draft
Regardless of how you will complete the final draft of the art gallery, the rough draft will be done in Word format (or PDF). Have your rough draft as close to that finished product as possible, but this is the minimum for the rough draft:
· At least five blurbs (250-350 words) written about your chosen works of art;
· Include images
· Subject matter
· Form
· Content
· Bibliography/Works Cited/References/Works Consulted page after the essay
· At least 5 sources—NO WIKIPEDIA.
· 1 source must be a printed book
· The rest may come from library databases, Google scholar, etc.
Final Copy
Make any changes necessary and submit the final version to Canvas.
