Migration in Italy

Introduction

Migration issues have remained a significant challenge for Italy. Being the main entry point for individual getting to Europe via North Africa, Italy is at risk of experiencing more illegal immigrants than before. According to the Italian Interior Minister, in this year alone, the country has seen over 93,000 mainly Bangladeshi and Sub-Saharan migrants arriving by boat into the Southern part of Italy. It presents about a 17% increase when compared to the year 2016 (Flood, 2016 N.P). Putting this in mind, the core research question that crops up is: What are the effects of immigration to Italy and what evidence-based interventions should be used to solve the situation? As a result; this report is focused on the general impact of immigration into Italy. In this, the core focus is addressing the effects of immigrants to individuals as well as the country at large. In doing this, the primary argument is that the government’s plan to set up laws intended to get rid of all illegal immigrants from the county is worthwhile.

Literature Review

A cost-benefit analysis on the issue of immigration into Italy presents two viewpoints. First, the ability to allow immigrants into the country portrays the country as less racist. However, on the other side, it has brought in a tag of war between the government in office and the opposition. The colliding priorities harbor the root cause of these conflicts between closing the borders and offering a social commitment to the immigrants. However, because most of these immigrants are the low-skilled, the chances of improving the economy of the country are less. For that reason, the government has taken up a brave step aimed at sending back home all illegal immigrants. For instance, to the host country, accommodating illegal immigrants means digging deeper into the country’s resource base so as to sustain their medical, education and daily up-keep. Without a workable plan between the country of origin and the host country (Italy), then, it becomes hard for effective sustainment of the immigrants. Therefore, it legally correct for the government to send all illegal immigrants back to their country without colliding with Italian Constitution clause of the provision of a safe haven for asylum seekers.

Additionally, the current economic downfall is having a massive impact on production in Italy. With the reduction in production, unemployment rates have risen by 7.8%. One attribute of unemployment is the massive competition of available working slots between the locals and the foreign workers. Nevertheless, more than 600,000 Italian citizens receive their pensions thanks to those immigrants who are entering the country. Looking at this, the presence of immigrants in the country may be labeled as a positive move on the growth of consumer-based despite the other challenges associated with them. For example, with their presence in the country, local products are getting extensively exposed to more new clients thereby offering better opportunities for business growth (Solari, 2016 N.P). Conversely, most Italian citizens are unhappy with the free world that most immigrants are given. For example, while Italian citizens are required to pay up for medical checkups, most immigrants are offered the service for free. Critically thinking, the presence of immigrants is not only harming the nation but also coercing the local into paying more taxes to sustain their presence in the country. For that reason, the best evidence-based solution to the immigrant challenge is getting rid of all illegal immigrants are suggested by the governmental initiative.

Methodology (Content Analysis)

The primary strategy in the successful completion of this content analysis was the utilization of thematic approach of looking at facts. For instance, because the paper was focused on impacts on immigration in Italy, more emphasis was on content looking on both the positive and negative side of the issue. Conducting a cost-benefit analysis provided the best foundation for terming the deportation of illegal immigrants as worthwhile. During this exercise, the major focus was on expressions used in the newspaper articles and how well they integrate with my thesis. In doing this, I was capable of successfully answering the research question.

Analysis of the Findings

From the exploration, it appears that presence of immigrants in Italy is good; however, the cost-benefit analysis of their presence proves that the cost outweighs the benefits. In this case, Italians are suffering at the mercy of the immigrants. Additionally, a closer look at the newspaper paper articles proves their validity and reliability in answering the research questions as well as supporting the thesis. For example, Ambrosini Maurizio (2013), article “Fighting Discrimination and Exclusion: Civil Society and Immigration Policies in Italy” rechecks on the national regulation and policies that can be used in changing the destinies of the immigrants. Through this article, it becomes evident that Italy has three types of immigrants, the asylum seekers, the illegal immigrants and the legal immigrants who have work permits in the country. With this exploration, it becomes simple to filter the truth and facts from mere assumptions when comes to creating a workable intervention in dealing with immigrant problems. For instance, it constitutionally right for the country to offer safety and protection of asylum seeker. However, where their presence directly affects the average livelihood (quality of life and well-being) of the people, then, a workable solution must be implemented by the government in office. Therefore, despite the highlighted benefits the immigrants have showered the country with, the cost of maintaining them overshadows the benefits, and therefore, the government must implement the framework to filter out all the illegal immigrants from the rest. As a result, it will save its people from the increasing social and economic challenges they are presently facing.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that the left-wing Italian government action to decriminalize illegal immigration is favorable to immigrants, their presence in Italy is exposing the Italian citizens to a more expensive life to sustain. Simple calculations by Farrell (2015) can prove this, assuming that immigrants hosted in welcome centers are given €3 as daily pocket money, lodging and medical attention for free, then, it becomes clear that the normal Italian will have to pay extra taxes per day so as to meet the needs and demands of the immigrants. Nevertheless, their presence has increased consumption rate of local products and a positive image of Italy as a multi-ethnic country. However, the maintenance cost and scramble for available job employment are making the local citizen's quality of life more demanding than ever before. For that reason, the government should go ahead and implement the deportation plan for all illegal immigrants. Doing this will bring about harmony in the country and reduce the social and economic conflicts between the locals, the legal foreigners, and the asylum seekers.
