Fall 2019
If you are naturally drawn to the profession of child advocacy, it is likely because you have strong opinions about some of the policies that govern the lives of children and have some ideas about the way you would like to see things change. This research project will help you become the most forceful child welfare advocate you can be by giving you practice in the skills required to persuade others to adopt your position on a public policy of interest to you and one that affects children.
You will follow the six steps for successful child advocacy as depicted in your textbook.
General Guidelines:
• APA Format • Times New Roman font, Size 12pt • Double spaced • A minimum of 6-8 pages of content. This does not include the cover page and reference page. • Cover Page must include a Title, your name, our course name, Montclair State University, and

Directions:
1. Conduct research on a child welfare issue you would like to develop an advocacy campaign for. 2. You will start off with a planning blueprint. See an example of a completed Planning Blueprint in
Chapter 3, Box 3.5. a. Goals or Outcomes b. Objectives c. Activities d. Who e. Time f. Performance Measures/Indicators g. Budget h. Evaluation
3. Go through the six steps to successful child advocacy. Steps one and two should take up the majority of your paper, as these are steps you are able to carry out. The remaining steps should each take up about half a page to a full page of your paper. Please note: you will not be carrying out this campaign so some of the steps will be hypothetical. You are required to discuss what
you would do if this was a real campaign or what you expect would be happening at the specific stage in the process.
a. For each step, start the section by describing the purpose of the step generally and then go into specifics about your advocacy campaign.
i. Step 1: Knowing Your Issue ii. Step 2: Research for Background and Impact
iii. Step 3: Preparing Effective Materials 1. Develop a summary sheet
iv. Step 4: Making Meetings that Work 1. You will not be scheduling meetings like step 4 discusses, however, you
will be detailing who the gatekeepers and decision makers are, as well as explaining how you would be reaching out to them to ask for a meeting and what information you would share in your meeting.
v. Step 5: Conducting Strategic Follow-up vi. Step 6: Reinforcing Successful Advocacy Outcomes
