[Use Times New Roman, double spaced at 12 font size with the standard 1” margins on each side in MLA format. Four full pages of text are required. Below are portions of an example research paper- please use this essay only as a reference for the layout, how to use quotes in the text, the in-text references, and the bibliography.]

[Develop a strong thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph]

“Nervi has been characterized as having an engineer's audaciousness, an architect's imagination, and a businessman's practical realism” (Chiorino). Italian Architect Pier Luigi Nervi, influenced by his biographical, cultural, and social upbringing, along with his engineering mind, produced many beautifully intricate, structurally logical, architectural designs.

[Content/Research with your own personal critical thinking, analysis, and a well-structured argument]

Pier Luigi Nervi’s background as an engineering student, engineering firm owner, and professor heavily influenced his design style and shaped him into one of the master engineers and architects of the 20th century. Previously, in the 19th century, “natural and applied sciences moved into the field of technology and industry and out of the realm of art” (authors last name page number i.e. Huxtable 19).

As a professor at the University of Rome from 1947, Nervi taught that a designer can develop truthful solutions in three ways: by understanding the pure harmony of the laws of the physical world that regulate the equilibrium of forces and the resistance of materials; by honestly interpreting the essential factors of each problem; and by rejecting the limitations of the solutions of the past (Catalano). (Quotes more than 4 lines you can indent 1” and omit quotation marks.)

Nervi’s main works were selected designs in competitions and spatially consisted of large sites in public spaces. Referencing Appendix 1, (For referencing required pictures/sketches) the large structural beams develop the seating and also are what holds up this structure.

[Conclude your paper with a reflection on how this information shapes the study and practice of architecture today.]

“It is not as strange as it seems that one of the greatest builders of modern times is not an architect, but an engineer” (Huxtable 16). Pier Luigi Nervi, throughout his whole career, understood the importance of technology and structural clarity in his work. Nervi was challenged by his own aspirations and the new technology available to him. Nervi’s work was greatly influenced by his Italian culture and exhibits his fascination with engineering and structure as it applies to architecture. The collaboration of architectural aesthetics and engineering concepts in Nervi’s work is what made him one the leading figures in 20th century Architecture.

The large structural beams develop the seating and also are what holds up this structure. Repetitive expansion joints and supporting columns 52 feet high withstand the cantilevered curved beams that make the roof, showing the concentration of the forces and the strength of the structure. Nervi explained that the outside stairs created a problem when trying to curve the reinforced concrete into his initial design of spiraling staircases, but he solved this by simplifying the structure’s design. An alternate material could have been used, but instead he tested his ability with concrete. His belief that reinforced concrete was the “most beautiful material that humanity has ever invented is evident in this design or creation ("Pier Luigi Nervi and the Art of Buildings").
