Historical Data

The historical data section consists of information that explains or describes what your topic is all about. This section might also trace the progress of the field and may evaluate certain sources. Therefore, the methodology section should describe any materials used in the study and how they were used.

Research Design

This section provides information relating to the overall structure the research will follow. For example: This research paper will be conducted as a qualitative research paper. According to Leedy & Ormrod (2013), “qualitative approaches have two things in common. First, they focus on phenomena that occur in natural setting—that is, the ‘real world.’ And second, they involve capturing and studying the complexity of those phenomena” (p. 139). Qualitative research is mostly found in many academic areas (p. 139). Also, “Qualitative researchers typically draw their data from many sources—not only from a variety of people but perhaps also from objects, text materials, and audiovisual and electronic records” (Leedy & Ormrod, 2013, p. 153).

Patton & Cochran emphasize that “Qualitative research is characterized by its aims, which relate to understanding some aspect of social life, and its methods which (in general)

generate words, rather than numbers, as data for analysis” (Patton & Cochran, 2002, http://www.ccs.neu.edu/course/is4800sp12/resources/qualmethods.pdf).

(The writer has to remember that the average audience may not know the meaning or be familiar with qualitative research.)
