Conventional Form (Word) incorporating Cover page, TOC, APA Levels 1,2, and 3, and includes Bibliographical references
Writing is essentially error- free in its mechanics. Its format is well-adapted to the research assignment and leads the reader to the writer’s conclusions. APA Conventions for reference citations are accurate and consistently followed in the document.
Paper follows normal conventions and has been carefully proofed. Style and format are easy to follow. Documentation of sources is thorough and follows the APA convention.
Paper largely follows normal conventions. Paper has largely been proofread, but some errors remain. One or two references might be missing and/or reference format is not consistent.
Contains multiple errors: subject/verb agreement, tense, sentence structure. Writing doesn’t follow conventional style and/or format. Source documentation is incomplete or doesn’t follow convention.
Clarity and Coherence
The writing flows smoothly from idea to idea. The writer helps the reader follow the logic of the ideas presented.
Sentences are well-structured and words are chosen to communicate ideas clearly. Sequencing of ideas and transitions between paragraphs and sections make the writer’s meaning easy to grasp.
Sentences are mostly well- formed, although there might be some problems or some unusual word choices. Sequencing of ideas is adequate. Transitions could use some work, but overall meaning is mostly understandable.
Sentence structure and/or word choice interfere with and obscure meaning. Sequencing of ideas and transitions between paragraphs and sections make following the writer’s meaning difficult to understand.
Focus, Organization, Style/Tone and Content
Choices related to focus; organization, style/tone, and content make the piece easy to read. Writing could be used as a positive example or model for other students.
Focus, organization, style/tone, and/or content result in effective communication. The purpose and focus of the piece are clear to the reader. Organization and content achieve the writer’s purpose well.
Focus, organization, style/tone, and/or content have some issues that interfere with communication. Purpose and focus are mostly clear, but not entirely. Organization and content need some work.
Focus, organization, style/tone, and/or content interfere with clear communication. The writer’s purpose isn’t fully achieved.
Research Question and Design
Student demonstrates ability to formulate a significant research question. Student develops a research design that uses original approach to the problem.
Student demonstrates ability to formulate a research question of some value. Student develops a research design that uses appropriate techniques to approach the problem.
Student demonstrates ability to formulate a modest research question of some value. Student develops a research design that uses standard techniques to approach the problem.
Student does not demonstrate the ability to formulate a meaningful research question. Student employs incorrect or outdated techniques to develop a research design.
Application of Content
Student identifies key conceptual ideas from the literature review and uses their original research to demonstrate why/how the executed body of work is appropriate to answer the research question. The applied approach is conducted either as an experiment or through a field study proposed by the student.
Student identifies some conceptual ideas and demonstrates how the work may be executed but is unable to demonstrate why the work is appropriate to an applied approach. Student has difficulty designing an effective methods approach to frame the experiment or conduct a field study.
Student identifies minimal conceptual ideas and is lacking in a cogent approach to presenting the relevance of the content to the research conducted. Student has difficulty demonstrating the application of the findings in context.
Student does not demonstrate the ability to clearly conceptualize ideas and develop a practical application solution to testing them to answer the research question.
Data Analysis with an (Excel) Application incorporating empirical data and charts/graphs
Student demonstrates strong knowledge of data analysis techniques. Analysis is elegant and/or data are new or original. Student clearly demonstrates validity of data and analytical techniques.
Student has sufficient knowledge of data analysis techniques. Analysis is complete and/or standard data are used.
Student has knowledge of data analysis techniques that may be lacking in some small ways. Analysis addresses major issues and/or standard data are used.
Student has insufficient data analysis knowledge for the project. Student is unable to analyze data without assistance. Analysis is insufficient and/or data are inappropriate.
Contribution to Knowledge
Student raises an original idea with the potential for significant contribution to the literature. The student’s original idea is positioned well within the literature.
Student raises an original idea that makes adequate contribution to the literature. The student’s idea is mostly well-positioned within the literature.
Student raises an original idea that makes a minor contribution to the literature. The student’s original idea is not optimally positioned within the literature.
Student research question does not make a contribution to the literature. The student’s IS research question is not clear.
Presentation of Research (PowerPoint)
Student uses virtual classroom to present and record research summary information in a logical and professional manner. Demonstrates confidence with topic area and technical requirements to showcase findings.
Student uses virtual classroom to present research findings but is neither completely confident nor able to use technology to present findings.
Student can use virtual classroom but has difficulty navigating in virtual space to present findings.
Student cannot present in the virtual space and is not comfortable utilizing the technology for the presentation.
