Research Paper - Grading Rubric Directions for the Research Paper:

1. Select a topic related to Criminal Justice or Homeland Security that is covered in the course content. For example, in MACJ560 (Gender, Race and Crime) the topic might focus on Women and Incarceration. A sample research paper can be found in the Program Resource section of the course.

2. Once you have selected your topic then e-mail the course Instructor by the end of week #2 for approval.

3. The research paper should meet APA standard; in text citations and references are properly documented in APA format.

4. The paper should include a minimum of (15) (double-spaced, numbered) pages and at least 15 scholarly sources.

5. The paper should be organized; each paragraph should flow logically into the next paragraph. Headings and sub-headings should be utilized.

6. Appropriate terminology should be used; writing should be clear and concise. 7. Appropriate font should be used (Times New Roman) and font size (12-point font). 8. The paper should be written in a professional tone. Familiar language should be avoided.

Content of the Paper should be well organized and include: • A Title Page in proper APA format • An Abstract • A strong introduction, main body, and conclusion

2. A brief history of the topic/issue, and the importance of studying the topic/issue.

2. The research paper should go from general ideas to specific conclusions within each paragraph. Transitions should tie the sections of the paper together, as well as adjacent paragraphs. The paper should flow logically from one idea to the next.

3. Scholarly research should be utilized and effectively described in the main body of the paper; information should be synthesized throughout the paper; including relevant and through discussions of sources that relate to the topic/issue and purpose of the paper.

4. The paper should demonstrate critical and creative thinking skills. 5. The concluding paragraphs should provide a summary of key points,

it should connect to the introduction, and should offer suggestions for future research and/or recommendations for policy changes/considerations.
