Research paper instruction-2 Research Paper Instructions

Your research paper must be written in your own language. Any plagiarized paper will receive a 0 point.

Word count: Not more than 1500 words EXCLUDING references and figure legends.

Topic: Select a research topic which is relevant to your course. The topic must be related to any of the chapters which you have studied in this course. It is better to select the topic and get it approved by your instructor so that you have opportunity to change your topic in case it is not appropriate. Topics must be approved at least 2 weeks before the due date of submission.

Research: After selecting the topic explore different sources to find out more on the topic, gather information to add to your existing knowledge.

Organization of the paper: Before you start read the instructions, grading policy, reference examples very well. Study the model paper for its structure (How it is written and how the in-text citations and given in the text and how the references are written. The content of the model paper is not important for you to study). The paper should contain the following sections

1. Title of the paper – Write the title of the paper so that it properly reflect your topic of the paper. It should not be same as a chapter title from your book.

2. Abstract – An abstract should identify the key points in your paper. By reading the abstract the reader should have an idea about what to expect in the paper. Write the abstract in 50 words.

3. Main body of the paper should be divided into introduction and several headings and subheadings as needed and meaningfully describe the content in simple language. Relevant images, charts, diagrams, figures, tables etc. should be included and embedded in proper places in the text and properly referenced in the text. At least 3 such elements should be included.

In a scientific paper, you need get the information from other sources and express in your own words with proper acknowledgement of the author. Do NOT copy any information even within a quotation ( "..." ). All figures need citation as instructed below. Any abbreviation should be defined clearly on their first appearance. Divide the main body in headings and sub-headings as necessary to give clarity in the paper.

4. A one para summary/conclusion section should summarize the paper at the end. 5. The main body of the paper must contain valid citations (called in-text citations) to support your

information in the paper. All in text citations should be numbered in the order of their appearance

in the text and should be listed as full references at the end of the paper under the heading “References” or “Works cited”. See the model paper posted for example.

6. Images, charts, diagrams, figures, tables should be included to support your information and should contain proper figure number and appropriate captions (also called legends).

7. References (https://hcc.instructure.com/courses/90978/pages/examples-of-references) should be written in a proper way and contain title of the paper, author(s)’s name, journal/ book name, volume/chapter of journal/book, page number or verifiable URL (in case of web reference). See examples. At least 6 references should be present of which 3 should be journal/book references other than your text book. If you use web references make sure that the site is authentic. Write the details of the reference including valid URL. Any freely editable website e.g., Wikipedia will not be accepted as reference web site. Below you will find few acceptable web sites.

i. Any NIH web sites ii. Web sites belonging to any community college or university iii. Reputed pharmaceutical company, hospital or institute web sites iv. Federal government web sites, e.g., CDC, FDA, USDA etc. v. Federal or state government web sites vi. National or state laboratories web sites. vii. Formatting: The style and formatting of the paper will be in AMA (with numbered in-text

citation) style. Write the paper in 12 point, Arial font with double space typing in a single column. Embed any figures in the text. You may use the template posted for writing.
