Research Paper Guidelines Your research paper will be 4 to 7 pages long. Follow your module activities to achieve each step of the project.
Base your research paper on one of the industries mentioned in the case studies in your Manyika reading, Module 4, that explore the state of several industries. You’ll choose an industry and one or two major challenges that the industry faces. You will elaborate on the automated system(s) that could help the industry overcome the challenge(s). As you'll see in your reading, you can choose from 1) Medicine, subject: hospital emergency rooms; 2) airline, subject: aircraft maintenance; 3) oil and gas, subject: oil and gas predictive maintenance; 4) grocery, subject: improved customer experience; 5) mortgage, subject: customer applications.
Almost all information in a research paper comes from an outside source and should have a citation at the end of every sentence or paragraph and matching bibliographic entry (also referred to as references) at the end of the paper. Include citations, footnotes, and endnotes. You are required to use the Word Reference tool (you have a help video for support with that). Your sources may be grey sources, scholarly, or non-scholarly ("grey" sources are not peer-reviewed, academic publications; rather they are government reports, for example, or institution reports).
Step 1of 3 Steps: Name the industry of your choice and explain why you chose it.
Step 2 of 3 Steps: Industry Description and Problem Statement
You may submit only one draft of the the industry description and problem statement. You may want to revise it after reading your instructor's feedback; you have the opportunity to revise it in the next assignment, Step 3 of your project.
Read the sample Industry Description and Problem Statement in Module 4. Describe the industry. Identify one or two problems your industry faces that could be solved or improved with technology.
Your industry description and problem statement submission should be no more than 2 pages. (See more formatting guidelines under Step 3, below.)
Review a peer's industry description and problem statement. See your Canvas Modules for a video on how to conduct a peer review. The timing is somewhat delicate in that your submission must be completed on time so that your peer may commence his or her review.

Step 3 of 3 Steps: Technological Solutions and Conclusion
Copy and paste your industry description and problem statement into Word. Continue the paper by researching possible technical solutions to the problems. Maintain your focus on technological solutions. (Tip: The substitution of technology for humans is not an acceptable focus for this research.)
Finish with a conclusion of no more than five sentences unless you feel really compelled to say more.
Your instructor will return suggestions for improvement after you submit your first draft of the research paper. You may submit a second draft of your research paper, as long as the first draft is submitted 48 hours in advance of the due date. The research paper final draft will be due the very last day of the semester, not including final exam week/day.
Here are some examples of solutions
Registration kiosks Robotics Personal Safety technology Sensory perception technology Document handling Transport methods
There are many other solutions that will be interesting to research that may not be suggested in the Manyika article. Help your reader by writing concretely so that he or she can visualize the technology. Add images if possible.
The Final Draft
Create a title page with your name and the title of the paper only in any format you choose. Make sure your bibliography matches your in-text citations. Edit--take out the irrelevant and repetitious; adjust grammar and spelling; make sure one sentence follows another logically, and the same for paragraphs. Do not state the obvious, such as "Technology is important in business today." (Imagine that you are publishing on a trade website. Don't those readers know that kind of thing already?) Format: except for the title page, your text is 12pt Times Roman, double spaced, 1" margins,
