Film Analysis Paper

You will view 2 films from the approved list. You will compose a film critique research paper in current APA format that includes a single introduction and conclusion paragraph as well as a title and reference page. The body of your paper will be split up in APA level headings according to film and you will write a 1-page reaction to each film viewed (using the questions below) and a 1-page reaction to a minimum of 2 film critics’ reviews for each of the 2 films viewed. This means you will write a total of 2 pages for each film. You will be required to cite all film critiques reviewed (4 total) in-text and list them on your reference page. Your final paper will be 4 content pages excluding the title and reference pages.

Reaction to Film

After reviewing the 2 films you will then write a 1-page reaction to each film. Quality is just as important as quantity. Do not give a plot summary. Some questions to help guide you through each film review are included below:

· Critique the storyline and how well it plays out. Is there a good story behind that illusion of technology and special effects?

· Discuss the themes and messages of the film.

· Does the film keep your attention? Is the editing rhythmic (meaning does each edit follow a rhythm)?

· What is the tone of the film?

· How well-performed are the characters? Are they believable?

· Critique the editing. Is the editing creative? Is it invisible? Is it distracting? Explain.

· Critique the music. Is the music effective? Explain.

· Critique the effectiveness of the film. What was your reaction as soon as the movie ended?

As you answer the above questions, be specific and objective. Below are some examples of objectivity.

· Instead of this: “The dialogue is poor”

Say this: “Real teenagers do not talk this way”

· Instead of this: “The stunts are awesome”

Say this: “The action sequences are stylish, but realistic”

· Instead of this: “The movie has plot holes big enough for a space ship to go through”

Say this: “The movie does not explain how the crew made it back to the solar system in time”

Reaction to Film Critics

Read a substantial review by at least 2 film critics for each film (4 film reviews total) you are watching. For example, if you watch Ben-Hur, you will need to review at least 2 film critics’ reviews on the Ben-Hur film.

In at least 1 page, compare/contrast your own reaction to the reviews of at least 2 other film critics for the same film. In what way did you agree or disagree with the film critic(s) you read for each film?
