Causal Analysis
Your research paper asks you to do a causal analysis of the problem you are describing.
For this paper a causal analysis can be thought of as having three parts:
1. A description of the effects of the problem that helps to establish the seriousness of the problem. For example, higher cancer rates among farm workers and developmental problems in frogs are effects of the herbicide atrazine that could be used to argue its use is a serious problem.
2. A description of the causes of the problem that helps determine the response to the problem. For example, the funding of university research by private corporations with a profit motive might be one cause of the problem with atrazine. Another cause might have to do with monocultural farming practices that make crops more vulnerable to weeds.
3. The third part of your causal analysis should propose a response to the problem by addressing the causes identified in part two. Changing regulations regarding funding of research into herbicides and insecticides and finding ways to encourage more sustainable farming practices would be logical responses to the problem with atrazine as these responses address the causes identified in part two.
The Assignment (60 pts)
For this assignment, based on your research and/or brainstorming, identify causes and effects of the problem you are writing about. List as many as you can. Then choose the one to three most serious causes and the one to three most serious effects of the problem.

Next, write a paragraph or two describing the most serious effects of the problem. Your goal in this paragraph is to convince your audience that this is a problem they should care about. Use any research you have been able to find to support your argument.
Then, write a paragraph or two describing the most important causes of the problem. Here, you want to persuade the reader that you have identified the factors most responsible for the problem. Quoting your sources can help do this.
Finally, write a paragraph or two proposing a response that addresses the causes. What can be done to lessen or eliminate the causes of the problem, and who specifically needs to act?
