Original Research Project
For this project, you will consider some contemporary issues you care about; ask questions about it; search for relevant sources to help you better understand one of those issues; and draft, revise, and submit a paper in which you take a position on that issue, drawing for support upon the research you have done.
You’ll incorporate your research into a coherent essay in which you develop your own position on your chosen issue. Your argument should be the central focus of your essay, and your sources should be supporting you, not the other way around.
Your claims should be clearly supported by references to the resources. Use the sources to develop your argument and explain your reasoning. Do not merely summarize the sources. Indicate clearly which sources you are drawing from, through paraphrase, summary, or direct quotation. Use quotes sparingly, as there are probably better ways to organize the info to your purpose than the way the original author is organizing the info. A lot of large quotes will discredit you and make it look like you don’t know how to think about this topic yourself. When using a quote, it should be further analyzed by you rather than letting the quote just sit there. CITE EVERYTHING; even (especially) when you paraphrase.
Follow MLA style (or whatever style you prefer in your field) in your paper, including in-text citations of the sources you directly reference. Add a Works Cited list on a separate page including all the sources, 8-10 (4 new ones from the informative essay) you reference within the paper. See the section of Everything’s an Argument on documenting sources (Chapter 22) or Purdue OWL for examples of MLA style. If you have drafted your paper in Google Docs, be sure to convert it to Word (and Times New Roman 12 point font) when you save it.
The final version of your paper is due both on Blackboard and in class on Friday, November 16th for 10 extra credit points or November 30th for normal points. As always, please include all drafts with your hard copy.
