Research Paper:

Choose a population and/or specific drug related to alcohol and drug abuse. This can be any group (women, adolescents, homosexuals, deaf, the elderly, general population, specific ethnic group) or any drug (heroin, meth, marijuana, alcohol etc). Research this population and/or drug.

For example, “Heroin addiction among the LGBTQ+ Community” or “Veterans and Alcohol Addiction). Write 9-page double-spaced paper (title page and references not counted) that summarizes this topic. The first page is the title page, the next 8-pages are content. The reference pages can be as long as needed, BUT they are not counted as content. So again, you must have at least 8-pages of content on the researcher subject.

Discuss the prevalence rate (statistics) of the problem, discuss risk and contributing factors within this group/drug that are related to alcohol and drug use, discuss potential other psychosocial/health issues that might occur (ie, loss of job, divorce etc). Then discuss common treatments and final end with a summary.

As far as risk factors, an example is for women risk factors for abusing alcohol and drugs is trauma and mental health. You may find others such as sexual abuse but those are just examples. Provide evidence/research related to the history of use within the population you chose. Discuss common treatment methods for this group.

Suggested outline:

Intro: Topic and Prevalence

Risk Factors for this population (for example, age, race, gender etc)

Associated health issues (such as liver disease and alcohol or lung cancer and tobacco)

Psychosocial consequences (loss of job, etc)

Common Treatments (inpatient, outpatient, medically assisted treatment etc)

Summary

You must provide at least  seven  references in your paper and provide a reference section at the end of your paper. Your paper must be written in APA format and include citations throughout the paper. Follow the format of the articles that you find. You will notice in professional journal articles that almost all of the research is cited by the authors because they are providing evidence from someone else’s work.

Research Papers are due to the instructor via Drop box on or before 6:00pm Sunday March 29th, 2020.

I provided an example of a student paper that I graded. I use track changes in my grading so you can see my suggestions and grading. I’ve provided common errors in the example so that you can see my grading style and expectations for an undergraduate research paper.

Please read the example and note the edits and suggestions I give. Be careful and detailed in your writing. For example, the first time you use a term that will be an acronym in your paper you site it once and then use the acronym throughout the paper. Your paper must be APA format.

In addition, here are examples of how references are written in American Psychological Association (APA) style. Refer to the APA manual 6th edition for proper citation.

Finally read the writing rubric located in the same Research folder. There are 4-main areas that I use to grade. Make sure you address all 4-content areas.
