ResearchPaper-AdditionalGuidelines.docx

Hello, scholars!

Our presentation for this week emphasizes the different perspectives on future disruptions on the web. Notice the difference between the point of view of the consumer/user and the organization that is trying to attract or engage the consumer/user. Consider how these different perspectives come into play in your final research paper topic.

Speaking of your research paper, some notes:

1. You have your topic and my feedback. Build from there. See below the emphasis on a SPECIFIC organization, product and/or service the the use of technology in gaining and/or maintaining a competitive edge.

2. How are you to approach writing your paper? Use your thesis statement to narrow the scope of your paper. In addition, work off of the following headings (making sure, of course, that you front the paper with an APA styled title page, and end with a references section that begins on a new page following the conclusion of your paper) :

Introduction

This introduces your paper and tells the reader where you’re going and what you’ll conclude—but briefly.

Organization/Product/Service

A description of your chosen topic, how you and why you came to choose it, and a clear statement of your opinion in an elaboration of your thesis statement.

Technology

In this, you’ll identify the technology at the root of all that you’re going to explore in your paper. If you’re focusing on an organization, for example, then you should describe and then discuss how technology helped them in the market. Spotify, the digital music company, has used streaming technologies and algorithms to reshape how we listen to music; Amazon has used automated distribution centers; and so on. If you want to tell us about a new car that has doubled its market share, then show how its safety and driving systems have revolutionized the new car field. Or how about health and beauty category Dove, which has impacted the market through social and interactive media? Take your topic and focus in this section on the impact of technology on your subject.

Competitive Environment

What does it take to succeed? Are there cultural and consumer habits we must take into account? Competitors? A SWOT analysis is appropriate here, examining the STRENGTHS of the organization, its WEAKNESSES, the OPPORTUNITIES in the market, and THREATS in the market to success.

Strategy

What strategy must be followed to result in success? Describe and explain.

Conclusion

So what does this all mean? Where do you see this going, keeping in mind both the technology and how people use this product, interaction with this organization, consume this service, etc.?

And last but not least: Your paper must be at least ten pages in length. Use APA style, standard 1” margins, 12 pt. Times New Roman, double-spaced. And observe appropriate spacing, formatting, page numbering, etc.  And the first-level headers should be centered as above, bold.

You must follow APA formatting guidelines.  However, while you will need a title page with basic information, you do not have to provide an abstract.  I don't generally read it as I will be reading the whole paper.

Lastly, on your research paper, PLEASE proofread and edit your papers.  This term I have graded too many papers which have careless grammar, punctuation, and APA mistakes that could have been avoided.  So, ...

A note on SafeAssign: Your submission will go through this tool that measures the originality of your paper. Please remember that, although you may write on a topic that you’re familiar with from researching and writing about it in other classes, you may not lift whole portions and ‘reuse’ them. That is, in fact, self-plagiarism and you’ll be penalized. Rather, take what you know and come up with a different approach, a new analytical slant, and be original in using that knowledge. Read through your earlier papers, if you wish, and then write original analyses based in part on what you’ve written—that’s permissible, as you’ll be adding those insights to new ones derived from subsequent research.
