Research Proposal Instructions and Outline
Essential Components of the Final Project Proposal will include:
1. Introduction– Provide an introduction to your topic or project. The introduction gives the reader an accurate, concrete understanding what the project will cover and what can be gained from implementation of this project. Your paper should NOT have a heading of “Introduction”. Because it is immediately following the title and the first portion of your paper, the heading is not needed.
2. Overview of the Problem – Discuss the problem, why the problem is worth exploring and the potential contribution of the proposed project to the discipline of nursing.
3. Project Purpose Statement – Provide a declarative sentence or two which summarizes the specific topic and goals of the project.
4. Background and Significance – State the importance of the problem and emphasize what is innovative about your proposed project. Discuss the potential impact of your project on your anticipated results to the betterment of health and/or health outcomes.
5. PICOt formatted Clinical Project Question(s)– Provide the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Expected Outcomes and Timeframe for the proposed project.
6. Literature Review – Provide the key terms used to guide a search for evidence and discuss at least five (5) summaries of relevant, credible, recent, evidence-based research studies to support the project proposal.
7. Critical Appraisal of Literature – Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence, what is known from the evidence and what gaps in evidence were found from the appraisal of evidence-based research studies.
8. Develop an EBP Standard – Describe two to three interventions (or a bundle of care) from the evidence and discuss how individual patient preferences or the preferences of others will be considered.
9. Implications – Summarize the potential contributions of the proposed project for nursing research, education and practice.
10. Conclusion
Make a Level One heading from each of the above topics: Introduction, Overview of the Problem, Project Purpose Statement, etc. If the information needs to be divided further, use Level Two headings. This will likely be needed at least in the Literature Review and possibly elsewhere. You can expand and use Level Three if you feel it is needed.
This is an APA formatted paper. It must have a title page page numbers, and a References section.

Title That Conveys or Describes the Assignment
Provide an introduction to your topic or project but do not start the introduction with
the heading “Introduction”. This gives the reader an accurate, concrete understanding what
the project will cover and what can be gained from implementation of this project. You
should have references here and in the next part, too. The PICOT question should be moved
to later in this paper.
Overview of the Problem (or Problem Statement—You Choose)
Provide a synopsis of the problem and some indication of why the problem is worth exploring
or what contribution the proposed project is apt to make to practice. Include a succinct and
detailed statement of what the problem actually is. This much of paper is completed with Part
1.
Project Purpose Statement
This is not the same as the Overview of the Problem or the Problem Statement. Here,
provide a declarative sentence or two which summarizes the specific topic and goals of the
project. (Note: the problem and the project are not the same. The problem is what needs to
be changed, done, etc. The project is what you want to do to accomplish this.
Background and Significance
State the importance of the problem and emphasize
what is innovative about your proposed project. Discuss the potential impact of your
project on your anticipated results to the betterment of health and/or health outcomes.
PICOt formatted Clinical Project Question
5
Provide the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Expected Outcomes and timeframe for the
proposed project. This much of paper is completed with Part 2.
Literature Review
Provide key terms (search words) used to guide the search for the evidence and provide at
least five (5) summaries of research articles to support the evidence. You could also include
what else guided you in selecting your articles—years of publication, type of articles, etc.
Heading of Few Words Describing Article One
Review Article One: what was researched, type of research, number participants, how
they were selected, reliability and validity of research, etc.
Heading of Few Words Describing Article Two
Review Article Two: what was researched, type of research, number participants, how
they were selected, reliability and validity of research, etc.
Heading of Few Words Describing Article Three
Review Article Three: what was researched, type of research, number participants, how
they were selected, reliability and validity of research, etc.
Heading of Few Words Describing Article Four
Review Article Four: what was researched, type of research, number participants, how
they were selected, reliability and validity of research, etc.
Heading of Few Words Describing Article Five
Review Article Five: what was researched, type of research, number participants, how
they were selected, reliability and validity of research, etc.
Critical Appraisal of Literature
6
Strengths and Weaknesses
Discuss strengths and weaknesses of the individual articles. You can compare them.
Knowledge Gained from Review
Discuss what is known from the evidence reviewed. What are your findings from the
review?
Gaps in Knowledge
Discuss any gaps in knowledge known from the research evidence. Do you still have
some questions about the evidence? Is there something the research hasn’t touched on that needs
to be researched or that has not been researched enough for the evidence to be strong? This
much of paper has already been completed with Part 3.
Evidence Based Practice Standard
Describe two to three interventions (or a bundle of care) from the evidence and discuss how
individual patient preferences or the preferences of others will be considered.
Implications
Summarize the potential contributions of the proposed project for nursing research,
education and practice.
Conclusion
Include a few sentences here to close out the paper.

References
Cite references using APA 7th ed. manual. If you use the APA formatting found in Word, it is
necessary for you to “Convert to Static Text”. Instructions on how to do this vary
according to your computer and version of Word, so if you need instructions you will
need to Google to find them yourself.
But I will not accept a paper with the formatting imbedded in the paper. You MUST convert
before you submit the paper for grade.
The indentation as it is done here is how you should indent your references. Be sure to double
space everything with no extra spacing between reference.
