FEM 2104 Gender, Disability, and Health Professor Meg Peters

Research Essay (worth 30% of final grade, 1500 words) Due in class November 26th at 11:59pm. This assignment asks you to build a research essay based on a topic that relates to course material.

1. Building on the course readings and our in-class discussions about bodies and disability, this assignment asks you to write an essay with an introduction, conclusion, and at least 2 body paragraphs, making a clear argument based on scholarly research you have done.

2. In your introduction, you must include a thesis statement that poses an argument with a clear so-what factor. Please underline your thesis statement. Possible topics include disability as it appears in the media, the failures (or successes!) of the health care system in Canada, ableism and its connections to classism, racism, sexism, cissexism, heterosexism, and/or fatphobia, etc. If you are having difficulty deciding on a topic, please discuss your ideas with your professor or TAs.

3. In your essay, you must use at least 2 course readings as well as at least 3 other

scholarly sources.

4. Please use correct APA citation style. Feel free to use first person language in this assignment, but it is not required. Please include your word count at the end of your paper.

This assignment will be evaluated as follows: Structure and Style (20%) Is the writing clear and well organized? Are proper spelling, citation and grammar used? Construction of Argument (60%) Is there a clear thesis statement in the introduction that argues for or against change? Is the topic of the paper clearly related to course material? Is the thesis of the paper strengthened by the body paragraphs with cited examples? Critical Response/Thinking (20%) Does the paper demonstrate critical thinking/engagement with at least two course readings and at least four other scholarly sources?

Note that your assignment will not be graded on how many sources you use (as long as you use at least two readings and two outside sources) but rather how you apply these sources in conversation with one another and how you structure your argument. Your assignment will need to demonstrate that you understand course concepts and how these course concepts are part of larger scholarly conversations. More sources does not necessarily translate to a stronger essay!
