Research essay

Length: 3000 words

What are the long term impacts of terror on individuals and communities?  And what do accounts of survivors of terror tell us about the nature of abjection and it's impact on their identities and lives, and their relationships with their communities?

Students are asked to read one account of a survivor of terror chosen from the list below and analyse it in order to explain the nature of abjection and its relationship to terror. Students must research the context of the experiences of the survivor, both during and after the experience, and discuss, using readings identified in the course, how their experiences illustrate the nature of abjection and the impact of terror on individuals and communities.  Note, all of the case studies are of people who may be defined as being victims, or people thrust into circumstances where they had no control.  However, in some cases, the line may be blurred and they operate in Levi's 'grey zone'.  This is a research essay.  Students are expected to engage both the readings suggested as course readings for this unit, but are also expected to read more widely, beyond the readings, conducting independent research.

A suggested essay streucture is below.  Students should note that this is a suggested structure, which accounts for many of the topics amd essay parts students are expected to engage with.  HOWEVER, the exact structure and the weighting given to each part by the student will depend upon which case study is chosen and how the student chooses to tackle the topic.  Likewise, the number of references will depend on the student.  Questions regarding the structure and the number of references will not be answered.

Suggested Structure

Introduction

Introduce the essay question and the approach taken by the student, including the main argument.  Note that the analysis of the case study should support the argument: this is a paper where you are attempting to advance theory, and so you should not describe the case study but rather analyse how it supports what you are trying to say.

Theoretical argument

What is your argument?  What are you trying to say?  How do authors understand, define and use the relevant terms in your paper?  These might include terms such as terror and abjection, in addition to terms which are specific to your case study.  Read a variety of texts relating to these terms and articulate your own understanding of these terms as they relate to your case.

Case study analysis

Here you must explain how your case develops and illustrates your argument.  You must therefore analyse your case in relation to the theoretical structure developed above.  Things to include:

· context of your case study: who, what, when, where and why?

· development of your theoretical argument using the literature AND your case.  Use examples drawn from your case including quotes (appropriately referenced), or discussion of incidents

· consider how generalisable your case is - does it illustrate all incidences of your argument or is exceptional

· strengths and weaknesses

Conclusion

Draw the threads of your argument together and wrap it up.

Bibliography and references

This obviously needs to be included.  However, as to the formatting of it and the references, I have only two criteria.  First, that the bibiolograhy and referencing be correct, i.e. in a recognised academic style.  Second, that they be consistent.  Beyond that, choose the style that is most comfortable for you.
