Research Case Study Paper Instructions, Topics for Case Studies and Required Paper Outline

HUMN 330

Purpose of a research case study analytical paper is to:

· Examine, research, and resolve a specific moral or ethical case study assigned by the instructor (topic chosen by student – list provided by instructor).

Process:

· Select a case study topic from a provided list at the end of this document. Must retrieve actual case study from MODULES, COURSE MATERIAL Research Case Study.

· Consult the “Point of View” document, find your case, and know the point of view in which you must address the problem in your paper (e.g. team, Board of Director, Law firm, etc.)

· Identify the moral/ethical problem in the assigned case study. Think of 3 approaches to solve the moral/ethical dilemma in the case.

Research your 3 approaches (recommend students locate resolved relevant case studies or articles on the subject). Use at least one primary source (resolved case study or article) per approach.

· Analyze the 3 approaches available to consider when resolving the issue; must conclude with one recommendation stated with the proper point of view.

· Write your paper using the required outline at the end of this document; use Turnitin; deposit your final paper by the due date.

Note: Use of Textbook for Primary Sources (articles at the end of each chapter): When doing your research, you should consider using the primary source articles within the textbook. The textbook chapter content itself can be used as background information in addition to the 3 sources required.

Timeline: Topic Request, Approaches, and Sources

· Week One : Case studies topics are listed below; select one topic from the list – first come, first served.

· First, find a topic and consult the actual case studies available to determine the moral and ethical issue within the study and see if it interests you.

· Second, select one that appeals to you for research.

· Third, consult the document called “Point of View” so you know how you will be responding. You may post your request early – cases are first come, first served.

· Week Two : By class time week two, students must post a case topic request to the respective discussion board thread. When posting include the following information: Topic, Case study dilemma, and point of view. Wait for the instructor to give the go-ahead. Once you have instructor approval, proceed with research. Please make use of the Hunt Library especially with articles and case studies. (Points are associated with this posting toward the research paper.)

· Week Three: Begin to think of 3 approaches to solving the problem associated with the case. A thread is available for discussion on approaches if students want to take advantage or need clarity on the project.

· Week Four : Work on your approaches and research.

· Week Five : By class time week 4, students must post a minimum of three reference sources to the discussion board. All sources must be submitted in APA format and approved by the instructor. Do not use oral interviews, encyclopedias, dictionaries, Wikipedia, videos, or blogs. You may use more than the three (highly recommended). The purpose of this posting is to be sure students are on the right track.

· Week Seven : You may begin posting your papers to Turnitin. Turn around is from 10 min. to one day by Turnitin.

· Week Eight : By class time week 7, all papers are due; no late papers accepted (firm policy). Please plan accordingly.

Writing Instructions:

· Overall paper content (excluding title and reference page) must be a minimum of 1500 to 2000 words which usually translates to 5 pages to 6 pages but no more than 7 pages. Anything less than 1500 words will not grade well. Please do a word count prior to submission.

· Abstracts are not required; if presented will be critiqued but will not count either for or against the value of the paper.

· The title belongs on the title page only; please do not add your title on the first page of content unless you are using a running title in the header. A running header should be embedded in the header itself and not the body of the paper.

· Thesis statement (point of the paper) should be the last sentence of your first or introductory paragraph per APA. (Refer to COURSE MATERIALS for an explanation of a thesis statement.)

· A Research paper contains the following: a title page; an introduction that contains the topic, setting, time frame, and point of the paper (ethical issue/dilemma); content paragraphs should include supporting evidence that researches various options and must be cited in-text; and a conclusion should include a restatement of your point, a recap of options researched (the evidence) and your conclusion/solution/recommendation based upon your research; and a reference page formatted per APA requirements.

· Keep direct quotes at an absolute minimum. If a quote is used (and please do not use more than one) you must use proper APA formatting. Preferred: paraphrasing.

· Mechanics: write in third person only, double space, 1” all around margins, title and reference page; indent paragraphs 5 spaces, 12 point font Times New Roman. Do not double/double space between paragraphs. All paragraphs must contain 5 sentences at a minimum. Must use APA format for in-text citing and for the Reference page.

· Paper will be submitted through the assignment in draft form to Turnitin and in final form to Turnitin (see Timeline above for due dates).
