India is a southern Asian country also known as the Indian subcontinent. It is located on the north side of the equator which means that the country’s time is 5.30 hrs ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (CIA, n.d.). On the west, the country borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the east Bangladesh and Burma and the north, Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and China.
Being the eighth largest and second most populated country in the world, India has a population of 1.3 billion of which 50% are below 25 years (Wikipedia, n.d.). Two of the country’s major ethnic groups are Indo-Aryan and Dravidian with the main religions being Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism. India has come a long way when it comes to education with enrollment rates reaching up to 93% for primary school.
This has greatly contributed to the economic growth of the country and the strength of the national currency which is Indian Rupees. The country’s GDP per capita is at an all-time high of 1861.50 USD as of 2016 with a GDP of 2.264 trillion USD (World Bank, n.d.). The country is the 18th largest exporter in the world with the major exports being refined petroleum, diamonds, jewelry, packages medicaments and cars most going to the United States (OEC, n.d.). Its major imports most come from China, and they include crude petroleum, Gold, coal briquettes, and telephones.
All of this economic growth is partly facilitated by the Quasi or union or central type of federal government the country has with elected officials at the union, the state and local levels with the Prime Minister playing the executive role (Ministry of External Affairs, n.d.). Some international and regional organizations the country is part of include the United Nations, BRICS, Commonwealth of Nations, G-20 major economies, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
