Abstract
A summary of the research study you are about to read. It is always a good idea to read the abstract first to get a general understanding of the article. Please note that no part of the abstract may be quoted in your research summary.

Occurs right after the abstract. Explains why the study in important.

Describes what research has already been conducted on the topic. AND/OR discusses the theory(ies) the authors used to guide their work.

Method
In this sections, the authors provide the specific steps they followed in conducting their research. Do not spend too much time on this section. All you want to know is if the authors used tests, surveys, interviews and/ or observations in their research. One – two sentences is sufficient.

What techniques did the authors use in their research?

Findings
Here the authors explain what they discovered in conducting their research. This section may include charts or tables if the research involved tests or surveys. It may include transcript excerpts from study participants of their research included interviews or observations of classroom activities. This is a critical part of the article.

What did the researchers learn?

Discussion – “So what?!”
In this section the authors will demonstrate why and for whom their findings are significant. It may be that their findings provides new information about the topic that previous research had not revealed. Perhaps the study contradicts (or confirms) what was already known about the topic. Sometimes the author will specifically comment on what their findings mean for schools and/or youth. They may write about their study’s implications for existing rules or policies. This is another critical part of the article. This section is typically useful for your synthesis charts.
