My Experience
There are associations whose fundamentals is to help those in need and give assets to individuals from the community who are experiencing troublesome occasions. Lakeview Pantry is a non-profit community service organization whose primary mission is to eliminate hunger in the community it is serving, alongside raising awareness of poverty and hunger. I am going to start with my expectations, impressions, and the significant aspects that I experienced.
I did not have any specific kind of expectations beforehand. What was shocking to me is how the people at the organization are very hospitable, kind, and welcoming. They give the volunteer a cozy feeling of belonging without even knowing the names of the staff, yet the atmosphere in the pantry was engaging. The saying never judge a book by its cover, or in other words, judging someone by their outside look they seem all good together, but I can't even imagine what they are dealing with from the inside. In my first day, I have encountered people who suffered from all kind of physical abuse, homelessness, and people that been laid-off from work. I have also come to appreciate everything that I have in my life from the roof over my head to the food in my stomach, and that some people are less fortunate than me. It also made me realize how privileged I am.
I learned so much from this experience my time so far at the pantry was divided into two lines of work. First, I helped with the food distribution team were we hand out food packages to our visitors in need. Second and for the most of my time so far I been helping the pantry to glean and unload donation that the pantry receives, alongside restocking shelves, and packaging the food to be delivered to the people hands.
To my best understanding, the Lakeview pantry mission is one of the pillars that our curse is standing on which is justice for the weak. Being from the middle east, I can easily relate to the unjust regime. In my opinion, it is a shame to any country as wealthy as the United States to still face a massive crisis of poverty within its states
