Analysis
What is Analysis?
What is it used for?
What is the difference between analysis and fact?
Analysis = breaking up the problem into smaller parts in order to understand it better
Analysis is used to get a better idea of the problem and how to solve it
Analysis is partially subjective because of the way you choose to analyze and the way you interpret the separate parts
4
Common Analysis techniques
Benchmarking =
Creating a list of indicators
(e.g. profit, market share,
customer satisfaction)
and comparing how
different companies
score on these indicators

Common Analysis techniques
Gap Analysis =
Determine what the current
situation is like
2. Determine what the ideal
situation is like
3. Determine how you can reach
the ideal situation (bridge the gap)

Common Analysis techniques
Pros and Cons list =
A list of the positive and negative
parts of several outcomes
Used in decision making,
but susceptible to cognitive bias
Source: <https://blog.ezinearticles.com/2007/03/the-pros-and-cons-article-template.html>
Pros and Cons list is vulnerable to cognitive biases though
7
Common Analysis techniques
Compare and Contrast =
Splitting up sources into smaller elements in
order to similarities and differences
Used to find trends and getting a
complete picture

Common Analysis techniques
Other Techniques:
SWOT Analysis
DESTEP/PESTLE Analysis
Marketing Mix Analysis
Five forces Analysis
Remember
Analysis means structuring your facts and sources in such a way that you can draw conclusions effectively
Which system you use is for you to decide
But always use a system!
Workshop
Start a meeting with your group and read 3 of the 5 articles about Cellphone addiction.
Create an indicator table which you can use to compare the articles.
Look at the example on the Teams page.
APA In-text
APA in-text
In high-quality research we do not only mention the sources at the end
Every time we use an idea from a source, we mention that source in the text
With APA you only need to mention the Name of the Author and Year of Publication
Every source also needs to be in the reference list
Example
According to Grit and Julsing (2015), research can be fascinating and fun. Oppong (2016) even says that research is essential for determining the chance of your business being successful. Research is also done at the HAN itself in collaboration with the professional field (HAN, 2018).

APA In-text
You Always need to mention the author and date
If the author is unknown: use the name of the organization/website
e.g. (HAN, 2018).
If the date Is unknown use: (n.d.)
e.g. (HAN, n.d.).
Research Report (1)
You now have to start writing your research report.
The research report is an individual assignment which is based on the sources you collected as a group.
16
Research Report (2)
In your research report, answer the research questions by analyzing the sources using the compare and contrast technique.
Every time refer to a source, you have to use an in-text APA reference.
For an example of how scientific researchers write, look at Panova and Carbonell (2018) or at Sarnaha and Hawi (2016).
17
Research Report (3)
Next week you will have to hand in the analysis section of your research report.
This means that for each sub-question you need to compare several sources and describe them according to APA-standards.
You also need to create an indicator table for 1 of your sub-questions.
The text of the analysis should be about 1-2 pages in total (not including reference list and indicator table).
18
Now
Start working on the analysis
Think about which sources you want to use for each sub question (at least 2 source per sub question). Compare the sources and combine the information to answer the sub question.
