Research Summary Guidelines

Empirical research is important to the study of human development. In this assignment you will have an opportunity to read an article that pertains to a specific age group discussed in this course.

Instructions:

· Choose one article from the attached list.

· Summarize the article using the format and questions below. You may subhead each section to keep your paper organized.

· Use the rubric to ensure all areas are addressed.

· All summaries should be 2-3 pages in length, double spaced, and should include an APA citation of the chosen article.

Use the following format for the Research Summary:

· Title of the article

· Literature review: The literature states what we already know and what we need to know.

· What do we already know?

· What questions are raised that warrant further research?

· Be specific on what the authors’ state in their lit review. List and describe.

· Read the article critically.

· Hypotheses:

· What are the hypotheses or research questions?

· What is the author investigating?

· May be stated as the purpose of the research/article.

· Participants:

· How many subjects are involved in the study?

· What ethnicity are the subjects?

· What age are the subjects?

· What is the educational level of the parents or of the subjects?

· Measures/Procedures:

· What measurement instruments were used? List and describe.

· Are they valid?

· What did they measure?

· What process or procedures did they follow?

· Results:

· What did the authors find?

· What was/were the answer(s) to their research question(s)?

· Discussion:

· What are the author's conclusions?

· What are the limitations of the study? If the authors do not cite any, can you think of any?

· What are the implications of the study? Why is it important?

· Conclusion:

· How can this information be applied? This can be in a personal, community, or academic context.
