Activity two (review questions)

Activity Description

Review Questions:

1. You are the office manager of a large firm. Your company prides itself on its high-quality customer service. Lately, complaints have surfaced that an increased number of incoming calls are being misrouted or dropped. Yesterday, when passing by the main reception area, you noticed the receptionist fiddling with his hearing aid. In the process, a call came in and would have gone unanswered if not for your intervention. This particular receptionist had earned an unsatisfactory review three months earlier for tardiness. Your inclination is to urge this 20-year employee to retire, or to fire him if retirement is rejected, but you know the individual is well liked and seen as a fixture in the company.

2. a) Pose several hypotheses that might account for dropped or misrouted incoming calls.

3. b) Using the double movement of reflective thought, show how you would test these hypotheses.

4. You have been approached by the editor of  Gentlemen’s Magazine to carry out a research study. The magazine has been unsuccessful in attracting shoe manufacturers as advertisers. When the sales force tried to secure advertising from show manufacturers, they were told men’s clothing stores are a small and dying segment of their business. Since  Gentlemen’s Magazine goes chiefly to men’s clothing stores, the manufacturers reasoned that it was, therefore, not a good vehicle for their advertising. The editor believes that a survey (via mail questionnaire) of men’s clothing stores in the United States will probably show that these stores are important outlets for men’s shoes, and are not declining in importance as show outlets. He asks you to develop a proposal for the study and submit it to him.  Develop the management-research question hierarchy that will help you to develop a scientific proposal. Your responses must be comprehensive, using terminology and concepts presented in the primary textbook as well as supplementary resources.  Write in complete sentences and use good grammar, double-spacing, 12 point font, with one inch margins.  Be sure to cite your resources and provide the references using APA format.  Remember to reference all work cited or quoted by the text authors. You should be doing this often in your responses.  Complete and submit the article research project.

Activity four ( Case Study 1)

Case Study 1

Review and submit the Starbucks, Bank One, and Visa Launch Starbucks Card Duetto Visa case study. A short abstract can be found on page 514 of the textbook, the written case, and a video for this case can be found on the publisher's website:

.  As much as possible while answering the prescribed questions, follow the Case Study Guidelines.  More information can be found for this case study at  www.starbucks.comLinks to an external site. www.bankone.comLinks to an external site. , and  www.visa.comLinks to an external site. .

Answer the following questions: 1.  What types of research were done at each stage?  Discuss the strengths of each different type given the stage of the project. 2.  Build the management-research question hierarchy for this project. 3.  Discuss the choice of an online survey to assess Starbucks' three objectives of functionality, brand fit, and benefits.  What are the pros and cons of choosing this survey method? 4.  The Duetto Card team turned to Greenfield Online to recruit a panel for one of its online surveys.  How might you build a sample frame of appropriate participants for future online or phone surveys? 5.  What measurement questions would you use to assess the effectiveness of the Starbucks Duetto Visa in a future customer survey?

CASE ANALYSIS

There are no exact answers or perfect solutions to case problems. Indeed, each recommended solution and justification can and is usually different comparatively amongst a group of respondents. The solution must fit the case and must be vigorously supported. The problem statement, analysis, selected solution, and especially the justification of the selected solution, are all critical elements in the case method. There are no short cuts to case presentations but a formalized methodology that enables the case presenter the optimal way to solve the case problem. In addition to the case analysis be sure to answer all of the questions given for the case. Your responses must be complete, using terminology and concepts presented in the primary textbook as well as supplementary resources. You must read and follow the Case Submittal Format file found in the course resources area. Please double-space, use 12 point font, with one inch margins. Be sure to cite your resources and provide the references using APA format.  Remember to reference all work cited or quoted by the text authors. You should be doing this often in your responses.

Review and submit the  Proofpoint: capitalizing on a Reporter's Love of Statistics case study. A short abstract can be found on page 514 of the textbook,  the written case, and a video for this case can be found on the publisher's website: www.mhhe.com/Schindler13eLinks to an external site. .   More information for this case can be found at  www.proofpoint.comLinks to an external site. .

Answer the following questions:

1. Discuss the value of this longitudinal research design. What issues does this case

reveal that longitudinal studies must address?

2. Researchers are increasingly asked for more than data displays; they are asked for recommendations. Choose one statistical finding in each year’s study that you

would recommend Crosley use in a press release about that year’s study. Remember, his goal was to capture media attention. Support your choices.

3. Forrester prescreened participants to determine if each had the appropriate level of knowledge and IT responsibility. Why would prescreening participants be

important to this study?

4. In the 2006 study, recruiting U.K participants was three times as expensive as

recruiting the U.S. participants. Knowing this, why was it important for Proofpoint

to have comparative responses?

5. In future studies, Proofpoint is interested in expanding the study to IT professionals in its other market segments, especially in Australia and Japan. Make the assumption that in each market segment it will be more expensive to recruit

participants than in the U.S. Make an argument for conducting the next year’s web

survey in each of these segments, as well as in the U.S. and U.K.

6. Proofpoint captured significant media coverage each year, both print and broadcast, with its longitudinal study. Assume that Proofpoint has continued to do this study each year since 2004. Make a recommendation for continuing or not continuing the Proofpoint study in the next calendar year. Support your argument.
