Guide to Developing the Problem Statement

The problem in a doctoral dissertation is the most critical component of the study. The problem explains the rationale for the study and validates its importance. Below are the steps for writing a problem statement. At the end of this guide, you will have the opportunity to create your own problem statement.

Step 1: Provide Background information

Step 2: State the Problem

Step 3: Provide Scholarly Support for the Problem

Step 4: Highlight the Impact

Sample Problem Statement

Breast cancer and the harsh treatment for the disease affects not only patients but their caretakers. While caring for a breast cancer patient, caregivers face physical and mental challenges while continuing to assume significant caretaking responsibilities. Caregiving often becomes a full-time responsibility which can last for many years. In the instance of a wife with breast cancer, husbands are often the primary caregiver. A majority of care givers report that caregiving is a burden physically, psychologically, economically, socially, and personally (LeSeure & Chongkham-ang, 2015). The problem is male caregivers have a demanding and exhausting caretaking schedule resulting in failure to practice good self-care (LeSeure & Chongkham-ang, 2015). According to Family Caregiving Alliance (2018) many caregivers are aware that their own good health means providing better care for the patient but often feel guilty when choosing themselves first (Family Caregiving Alliance, 2018). As a result of failing to take care of themselves, caregivers often become psychologically and physically ill reducing their ability to care for their ailing spouse (LeSeure & Chongkham-ang, 2015). Gaining male caregivers’ perspectives on barriers preventing good self-care could lead to the development of interventions and resources for male caregivers to begin practicing good self-care.

Breaking it Down Step by Step

Provide Background Information

Briefly introduce the problem to provide context for the reader.

Breast cancer and the harsh treatment for the disease affects not only patients but their caretakers. While caring for a breast cancer patient, caregivers face physical and mental challenges while still assuming caretaking responsibilities.

State the Problem

State the problem including the consequence(s) of the problem. Remember: Without a consequence, you don’t have a problem, you have a situation.

The problem is that _________ (state problem) resulting in __________ (consequence of the problem).

The problem is that male caregivers have a demanding and exhausting caretaking schedule resulting in failure to practice good self-care (LeSeure & Chongkham-ang, 2015).

Provide Scholarly Support for the Problem

Support the problem with literature illustrating the consequences of the problem.

According to Family Caregiving Alliance (2018) caregivers are aware that their own good health means providing better care for patients but feel guilty for choosing themselves. By not taking care of themselves, caregivers become psychologically and physically ill reducing their ability to care for their ailing spouse (LeSeure & Chongkham-ang, 2015).

Highlight the Impact

Indicate potential benefits to people, organizations, society, etc., for addressing the problem.

Gaining male caregivers’ perspectives on barriers preventing good self-care could lead to the development of interventions and resources for male caregivers to begin practicing good self-care.

Now it’s your turn. Create your problem statement!

Background Information

Briefly provide background to provide context for the reader in the box below.

Increase in the minimum wage has been argued to have negative impacts on employment. Available empirical evidence shows that increasing the minimum wage results in unemployment (Neumark, 2018). This is associated with the fact that as the government raises the minimum wage, companies are required to spend more money on salaries and wages than before. As a result, in order to maintain profitability, companies opt to lay off some of its employees. This in turn results in high unemployment rate. Furthermore, some of the small companies end up not being able to survive paying their employees high minimum wages, and as a result they end up closing down rendering their employees jobless (Neumark, 2017).

State the Problem

State the problem, including the consequence(s) of the problem in the box below. Remember: Without a consequence, you don’t have a problem, you have a situation.

The problem is that despite the fact that increase in minimum wage increases employees’ earnings, it consequently results in high unemployment.

Provide Scholarly Support for the Problem

Support the problem with literature illustrating the consequences of the problem in the box below.

According to Neumark (2017), there is profound evidence that shows increasing the minimum wage results in significant job loss. Research shows that raising minimum wage reduces job opportunities for low-skilled workers. Since companies are required to pay high salaries to their employees, they only look for the most qualified employees so that they can get value for their money. In addition, companies are more likely to shift their business operations to states or foreign nations that have relatively lower minimum wage.

Highlight the Impact

Indicate potential benefits to people, organizations, society, etc., for addressing the problem in the box below.

Understanding the impacts that increasing the minimum wage has on employment, the research will provide insights on how federal and state governments can ensure that increase in minimum wage does not result in job loss.

Part B: Background to the problem

The debate regarding the impacts of increasing minimum wage has lasted for long with no clear conclusions on whether raising minimum wage is good or bad for the economy. Research shows that increasing the minimum wage results in increased money in the pockets of employees (Neumark, 2017). However, it is also associated with profound job losses since majority of employers cut down the number of their employees in order to maintain profitability. Increase in the minimum wage requires companies to spend more on salaries and wages. As a result, they lay off some percentage of their workforce in order to maintain profitability. Contrary, they increases prices of their products and services in order to cover up for the increased expenditure on salaries and wages. Employees on the other side spend their increased income to pay for high products and goods, thus making no change in their living standards (Neumark, 2018).
