Drafting the Introduction for a Qualitative Research Paper
Complete your Module 1 Assignment by the end of Week 1.
For a detailed overview of course assignments, please refer to the Assignment Overview (https://ace.instructure.com/courses/2129423/pages/course-overview) page located in the Getting Started Module.
During this course, you will design and conduct a qualitative research study. In this module assignment, you will identify your topic and review a minimum of ten peer-reviewed articles to assist you in developing the background for the topic. You also will describe the background of the problem and develop problem and purpose statements.
Your colleagues in this course will complete a questionnaire in Module 6 posing as the target population and sample you specify.
No IRB will be obtained, so any information collected is only for the purpose of this course and should not be published without IRB approval. The final 10- to 12-page qualitative research study (not including title and reference pages) is due in Module 10.
This is a simulated research project. You will only use your peers in this course to collect data throughout the duration of your research project.
Step 1 Access the Qualitative Research Paper Template (https://ace.instructure.com/courses/2129423/files/193417138/download?wrap=1) . Save a copy of the template so it is easily accessible. Rather than typing into the template, you will copy and paste the headings and follow the guidelines in the template to do your work. You will begin composing sections (“Chapters”) of the paper in a new Word document in this assignment, revise and compose new sections in upcoming module assignments, and compile the final paper in Module 10.
Step 2 Identify a topic appropriate for qualitative research in an area of interest related to your program of study.
Skim the first few sections of the template to determine the types of information you need about your selected problem.
Locate a minimum of ten peer-reviewed articles from the ACE Library (https://ace.libguides.com/home) to gather background information about the topic.
Review the ACE Research Design Guide (https://ace.instructure.com/courses/2129423/files/193417117/download?wrap=1) and begin brainstorming the qualitative design best suited for your study.
Step 3 Determine the target population for your study. This is collectively the group of people most impacted by the problem, issue, concern, or need in the action research study. For example, your target population might be “high school social studies teachers in the U.S. with three or more years of experience.” You will describe this population in your research study but will only gather data from your online peers posing as members of that population.

Determine the criteria for participant selection in the study. For example, what education, position, or real-life experiences must participants have to be eligible and provide relevant data in the study?
From those notes, define your research sample, including how they will be selected. An example sample from the target population described above might be “high school social studies teachers in the XYZ school district with three or more years of experience.” Although you are writing the sampling procedure for an actual study, you will only gather data from a subset of your online peers playing that role.
Step 4 Follow the guidelines in the template to draft these sections of Chapter 1: Introduction in a new Word document:
APA-formatted title page Introduction (no heading) Problem Background Problem Statement Purpose of the Study Research Question
Your research question should not be answered Yes/No and should begin with “What?” “How?” or “Why?” Target Population, Sample, and Setting Summary APA-formatted References
These elements may change as you progress through the assignments, but they provide a starting point for your exploration.
Step 5 Use these questions to critically review and proofread your work:
Are all required elements included? Are headings formatted identically to those in the template? Is information attributed to original sources with in-text citations? Are assertions supported with citations from scholarly research? Do each of those citations have a match in the References section? Are in-text citations and references formatted according to the latest APA standards? Does the narrative flow, or are more transitional words and phrases needed between sentences?
Step 6 Submit your 3- to 4-page APA-formatted paper (count does not include title and reference pages).
Your Turnitin similarity score may be inflated due to using the template. You will not be penalized for including language from the template prompts.
Time-Sensitive Preview: By the end of Module 5, you must have selected five participants for your simulated research study and invited them to participate. Preview the Module 5 assignment. Use the People list in the course and then send a Canvas email to invite them to participate in your questionnaire.
You also will need to identify one colleague familiar with your research topic to review and provide feedback on the 10-item questionnaire you will develop in Module 6. Prepare in advance to meet assignment submission dates.
Please read the Assignment Guidelines (https://aceedu.s3.amazonaws.com/production-files/pages/assignment-guidelines.html) before you begin working.
