1.Andrew Rudy "Inside the Puppet Box" Wayang kulit is a very traditional, ancient form of Javanese theater. It involves finely crafted puppets made from intricately cut leather pieces whose shadows are cast onto a white, cotton screen. The puppets and puppeteers "act" out stories with important meanings and history behind them. This form of Javanese theater originated hundreds of years ago, and was used as a celebratory play, rites of passage, and holidays or events. Wayang kulit translates to "leather puppet show", from Indonesian. Throughout the different regions of Indonesia and Asia, Wayang kulit often has many variants. Once of the most modern and popular forms of Wayang kulit is the contemporary court-based Surakarta, or Solo. Solo is a very flexible form of Javanese puppet theater, which is one reason it is so popular. Wayang kulit is a very complex form of theater compared to others, and it can take more than a lifetime to fully understand the intricacies of it all¡£ 2.The viewpoint of Indonesian theater from North America had been incomplete for years up until recently. The awareness and understanding of a more widespread Indonesian Theater began through performances at festivals and expositions in North America. These performances caused many American scholars to travel to specific provinces in Indonesia to experience the Indonesian Theater personally and where it began. Many scholarly books have been written on this type of theater since it became more well known amongst American scholars. Indonesian theater has many different forms based on the region, time period, and occasion. It includes both puppet theater, as read about in "Inside the Puppet Box", and a more traditional theater with performers and actors. As appreciation for the Indonesian art form grew in North America, museums began to open. Many famous artists and puppeteers donated their time and art pieces to these museums. Indonesian theater is a very interesting art form because of it's intricacies and diversity, and it has, in recent years, become much more popular in America. 3. (justin hua)This book review was about global bollywood and its importance in Hindi song and dance. The authors Sangita Gopal and Sujata Moorti explained the anthology Global Bollywood and its epistemological schema. They point out two points about the principles of Bollywood song and dance. First is that Hindi film and music has always been linked to other world cinemas and musical forms as stated in the book review. Several music forms that they say are linked to Hindi culture are western classical music, rock, disco, and bebop. Furthermore, what I found interesting is the link between Israeli culture and Hindi music and dance. From the text, it is said that in Israeli culture, Bollywood music is held at a high standard and that it is quintessential in terms of harmony and stability. The second point that the article states is that Global Bollywood has had an economical side to it. "The consumption and development" of Hindi song and dance has always been a huge factor for contributors to look upon.
