Journalism Project #1: Standing Rock North Dakota and An Indigenous Peoples History of the U.S.

For this week's Journalism Project #1,  I am asking us to specifically research and investigate the social justice struggle at Standing Rock, North Dakota. Usually, I would ask you to research your own story but what has happened in Standing Rock, North Dakota over the last few years is an important current issue as we are reading a historical analysis of Indigenous America(s).

The assignment: Type a 2 page  (double space) research and reflection essay on the current issue happening in Standing Rock, North Dakota. Include the connection to our current reading An Indigenous Peoples History of the U.S.

· Some guiding questions:

1. What are some connections and hxstorical legacies from our reading in An Indigenous Peoples History of the U.S. and what has happened at Standing Rock, North Dakota?

2. What are the connections of Indigenous identity and  Power between the struggle in North Dakota and the Trump Administration?

3. What do you think are the connections between Black Lives Matter and Native Lives Matter?

4. What are your personal reflections about what has happened in Standing Rock, North Dakota?
