Business Case Analysis

DIRECTIONS:

Overview:

Today’s business world is constantly in a state of “continual improvement”. As an ITM specialist, you need to see where companies can use technology to enhance their businesses. This is a skill that is greatly valued by companies today – to have an employee that can see an issue or opportunity and be able to help a company capitalize on it. But equally important is to recognize when one of your employees have a good idea as well. Thus, the business case analysis project for this class (Week 4 and Week 10) consists of analyzing a business issue and trying to solve for a solution. The business issue to be analyzed will be from your textbook. For Week 4’s work, you can choose anything from Chapters 1-4 and for Week 10, you can choose anything from Chapters 5-8). After reviewing all reading and PPT Lecture data from these weeks, you will need to find a topic of interest. From there, GOOGLE the issues that are currently in place today. For example, if you were interested in Data Breach, then you would GOOGLE, “What are the current DATA BREACH issues happening today?” Pick one of the issues that you see and prepare the following PPT submission. Format Required: This exercise is ONLY A PPT submission and thereby NO paper and NO presentation is due. The PPT is extremely specific to a format that helps the student logically analyze the issue. As you may know, all issues present lots of other issues and you as a student must sift through them to fine the most important issue you want to solve. From here you might also do some research (via the textbook or GGU Library or Google) to find out what options are available to help resolve this issue using technology. This is no different than what is done in the work world. There will be several stories that are given to you about a problem and you need to analyze them and seek the best solution to go after for your organization. The format consists of 5 PPT slides:

1. Title Slide (This one doesn’t’ count as part of the format but is one that you should ALWAYS have in any presentation)

2. Summary (What is the business situation about? Give a very brief overview but be sure to ONLY include data that will be important to your solution. Thus, do not include history back to 1900 if it has no bearing on the solution you are seeking. You must be strategic on what you include here while still telling the story)

3. Analysis: (What are the 1-2 main issues that are presented? There are always more than 2 issues but you need to narrow it down to what is important using your ITM learnings both in this course and in prior courses. You then need to narrow it down to ONE issue you are going to have the rest of the slides focus in on. So at the end of this slide, you need to tell the reader which issue you are going to try to solve and why)

4. Alternatives: (Best to provide 2-3 alternatives that you looked at discarding the ones that didn’t seem to have merit after analyzing it. So think about what solutions could be used to solve the issues noted above using your cumulative knowledge of the courses you have taken and your experience too?)

5. Proposed Solution: (Which of the selected solutions above would be the best to implement given the business environment, globalization, business values, systems architecture and/or the risk associated with such conclusion? And explain “why” you feel this solution is the best…all on ONLY ONE SLIDE)

6. Conclusion: (This is a two-step process for this slide. You need to first restate what your recommendation is and then you need to provide the top 1-5 steps needed to resolve this issue. You close on this slide.

7. References: (Usually, this is only done in academic settings, but you are welcome to have one of these slides if needed. Normally, if used any data that needs a reference, that reference goes on the slide where the data is which is why you don’t have one of these slides in real-life.)

Resources: There are many resources that can be helpful to use, including talking to the professor. For this class, there is a LIBRARY GUIDE that has been developed which has information on business cases. There are several You-Tubes and books that might be of help by simply “googling” business case analysis. Another good place to look at is a show called “Shark Tank” which shows business case pitches consistently. This is a good place to learn about “story telling” techniques that work well in reality. There are many databases within the school library that can provide you historical and current data to assist you in this project. In addition, the GGU Business Librarian is an outstanding source as well. All of these resources should be sought and potentially used in the development of your paper and presentation. Students will practice analyzing business case issues using case studies. This will be limited to 2 case studies and will only be submitted in PPT format without presentation. The goal of this exercise is to communicate in a limited slide selection (5 slides).
