Case Study – Meals on Wheels |
|
Meals on wheels delivers pre-packed meals at home to the elderly and in some cases to the disabled. Deliveries are made by volunteers using their own vehicles. The overall process was going smoothly till last couple of months, however, a lot of complaints have been made from the customers regarding food poisoning since last two months. Meals on Wheels is more concerned about various risks that could be caused to its customers as the consequences of food poisoning for frail, elderly or disabled patrons of could be very serious.
Research has found the following:
There is no formal procedure for handling and delivering food. Most of them have no previous experience in delivering food. As the delivery is done by the volunteers, the turnover rate for volunteers is very high and they are not given proper training. Most of the time, when the patron is not at home while the meal is delivered, the meal is left outside the door and sometimes its left with the neighbours. The food is carried in a normal container in a bag and served in heated granite plates. Some patrons require special foods, as they are diabetic or allergic to certain foods. In many cases, the drivers have not delivered the correct food to the patrons in a hurry.
Food Standards ANZ estimate that there are 7 million cases of food poisoning annually in Australia

Using the “Risk Register”, you are required to:
1. Identify the risks associated in this scenario
2. Rate the probability of occurrence and impact of risk using scale (1-3) and calculate the risk core by multiplying the probability of occurrence and impact risk
3. Formulate the strategy to mitigate the identified risk
4. Identify the responsible person and timeframe for the strategy
An example has been done for your reference below

Note: Risk Assessment
A. Likelihood: Rate it in a scale of 1 to 5, → 5 = most likely, 1 = less likely
B. Probability: Rate it in a scale of 1 to 5, → 5 = highest probability, 1 = lowest probability
C. Risk Rating = (A) x (B)
Discuss the risk here below:
