Assignment:  Please write in response to only one of the following questions:

· Does media and popular culture representation of black Americans, particularly of black men, contribute to a dangerous climate of white fear and anxiety? If so, how so?  If not, why not?  Be specific.  Support your claims with examples from the film.

· Considering the billions of dollars made off the imprisonment of people, the ongoing practice of prison labor, and the cases of unjust imprisonment, is our country (either the government or corporate America) obligated to repay affected communities / families for their labor?  Why or why not?  Be specific.  Support your claims with examples from the film.

Requirements:

1. 750-1,000 words, plus a Cover page and a References page.  You do NOT need to write an abstract for the midterm.

2. MUST use the film, 13th, as one of your sources, and you MUST use one (1) additional source, chosen from any of the assigned reading up to this point in the semester.

3. No Block Quotes.

4. Strict adherence to APA formatting (12 pt. Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins all around, double-spaced, etc.).

The successful paper will do the following:

· Focus on the topic provided with adequate examples/examination of this topic

· Provide evidence (quotes) that demonstrate the theme/topic you’re analyzing

· Demonstrate critical thinking, reading, and writing skills by making sound claims and supporting them with evidence in an organized and logical manner

· Present a clear, arguable thesis statement in the introduction

· Have well organized paragraphs with clear topic sentences

· Effectively use transitions between paragraphs and ideas

· Support the thesis statement and other claims with textual evidence and examples

· Come to a conclusion that moves beyond summary

· Effectively synthesize textual material via quotations
