Introduction section:
The purpose of the introduction is to provide the foundation for important research questions. An effective introduction provides the justification and direction for the data collection and analysis. One way of describing an introduction is to describe an occurring phenomenon, why it’s important to understand it better, and what remains to be known. Likewise, for this assignment, you would describe a profession or field (e.g., What is the nature of the work? Is it a growing profession? How might the history/trends impact the field?), why someone would want to know more about this profession (e.g., Is this a rewarding career? Are there significant opportunities?), and identification of research questions that fill a research gap (e.g., What isn’t known about this field that you would like to know? What are the rare and valuable skills needed to succeed?). Keep in mind that the introduction is a setup for the method and discussion sections. In essence, the introduction identifies what is already known from published sources and what still needs to be known. The introduction should implicitly support the value of your method—the informational interview. Answers to your research questions require tacit knowledge from actual practitioners.
In terms of formatting and style, use APA style with regard to font, margins, spacing, and citations. Rather than personal opinion, claims made in the introduction should be supported with cited sources. Please note that the cited sources are more likely to be from credible newspaper, trade, and professional sources rather than academic journal articles. The expected length of the introduction is approximately 1.5 pages.
