Note: This is a group project (two to four students per group)!

Marking scheme for report: course instructor + teammate evaluation

In this project, students are required to obtain annual reports for two companies in a given industry – one to serve as the “base company” and one to serve as the “comparison company”. Then, students should analyze key trends in the base company’s three main financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flow), and do ratio analysis. Through the analysis, students need to compare the base company to another company in the same industry, and to assess the base company’s performance and identify issues which would be particularly important to investors.

The report on the group project should be consistent with professional standards, including the following:

1. Title page (title of the report; name and student id of each group member, course title; date)

2. Main analysis, results, and your assessment (no more than 15 pages)

3. References (all resources, such as books, journals, and internet sources)

4. Appendix (calculations of financial ratios – specify clearly the relevant portions in the financial statements where numbers in the ratio calculations appear)

To support the written paper, students should submit the necessary financial statements (not the entire annual reports) of both companies being analyzed.
