Essay 2 The Curious Case of Anthony Johnson

The Goal Read the essay on Blackboard by Tyler Parry, titled “The Curious History of Anthony Johnson: From Captive Slave to Right-wing Talking Point.” Then consider how professional historians and academic specialists sometimes interpret historical data and evidence differently that the popular press or mass media does.

The Background

Make sure you read these instructions through in their entirety before submitting your assignment through Blackboard. The fastest way to loose points is to skip over any of the assignment requirements.

Your Assignment

What does Prof. Parry want us to understand about the life and experiences of Anthony Johnson? Who was Johnson, and why is he still remembered today? Perry then reports on what some mass media outlets have written about Anthony Johnson. How is the mass media interpretation of Johnson’s life different than Perry’s? How might we explain those differences? Finally, what do those differences tell us about the historical interpretation of past events? Be as specific as possible. The more specific you are the higher grade you will earn.
