The news is full of interesting topics that relate to topics and concepts that we are and will be learning about in this course. For this assignment, you will work in groups again.  Each pair of students in the group will find a newspaper article that is relevant to one topic in environmental biology.

Each group should select a topic that relates to environmental biology, that you find interesting and would like to know more about.  Each pair of students should find an article, relevant to that topic, in a recent (written in English after July 1, 2019) article in a major newspaper (you can read most major newspapers on the internet (e.g. New York Times, LA Times, Seattle Times, The Guardian US edition, Washington Times, Washington Post - do NOT use any children's magazines for your articles) that discusses an environmental problem e.g., soil erosion, air pollution, the decreasing numbers of neotropical migrant songbirds, climate change.  One good way to do this is use Google to search “newspaper article TOPIC” and then check the results for articles from a major newspaper.   As you have likely seen if you read the news, multiple papers will sometimes publish articles that are from the same original source and basically say the same things.  Do NOT just choose articles that restate the same material but, instead, articles that report on different aspects of the topic that you choose.  In other words, treat this as you would treat an assignment that requires you to conduct library research for a paper you are writing on an assigned topic - in this case you pick the topic!

Each pair of students should read and make notes on the article that they selected prior to the group discussion.  During the discussion, as a group, you should clearly summarize the environmental problem discussed in the articles IN YOUR OWN WORDS (approx. 1 paragraph for each article for this first part) and how this problem results from one or more of the three root causes of environmental problems (human population growth, pollution and abuse of resources).   After discussing the cause(s) of the problem(s), propose practical solutions to the problem.  In your proposed solutions, you may want to consider factors such as resource consumption and technology.  Finally, discuss what barriers may exist to implementing your solutions and the potential environmental, social and economic impact of the proposed solutions.

The paper should not be longer than 4 pages ( I would think it could take you at least 2 pages or more for all of the summaries, and solutions and barriers to implementing proposed solutions).  Do not quote phrases or sentences form the article - use your own words instead.  Make sure to cite and include references for all sources you use.  Do not use Wikipedia, any encyclopedias or children’s magazines for any of the sources.  Make sure to use complete sentences and spell check it before you submit it through Turnitin in Canvas.  Include a copy of the newspaper article, the notes each pair of students made on the paper they selected and the final summary paper.  Also, make sure to put all of your names at the top of the summary.  Late assignments will have 10% of the maximum possible point value deducted per day for each day it is late.
