that collective success is attained. The IOM report, the future of nursing that was massively the

work of the Robert Wood Foundation Committee, is an example of the efforts being carried out

as far as nursing's future is concerned. This paper expounds on the works of the committee

through the IOM report.

The Work of Robert Wood Foundation Committee Initiative

To initiate ways through which the many challenges facing the profession of nursing are

solved and hence transforming how the U.S. citizens get access to healthcare services, there is a

need for all the stakeholders to take part in the process. The Institute of Medicine (IOM), in

collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), are examples of such

stakeholders in the field of health that have been in the frontline to champion for enhancing

nursing in the United States. The two stakeholders have partnered in an attempt to better the

“Future of Nursing” through actions such as increasing the number of nurses in the U.S. research

shows that if such a challenge is not solved, there will be a significant nurse shortage by the year

2025 (Altman et al., 2016).

The collaboration between IOM and RWJF through the committee formed was given a

duty to closely examine the nursing field's current challenges and how these challenges can be

addressed to better the profession. As a result, the committee was required to come up with bold

recommendations through which the nursing profession will depend on the quest to attain a high-

quality health service delivery, reliable healthcare, and one that meets the patients' different

needs.

Key Messages that Structure the IOM Report Recommendations

The messages are 4 in total, and they are aimed at the complete transformation of the

profession of nursing. They are;

1. The nurse should practice fully to the maximum extent of their training and education.

2. A nurse should strive to attain the highest level of training and education by going

through an enhanced education system that makes it possible for achieving a seamless

progression of education.

3. A nurse should be a full partner with other health professionals, including the physicians

in the process of health redesigning in the United States.

4. Effective policymaking and planning of the workforce need efficient data collection to be

undertaken and improved information infrastructure.

How the above Messages have been Impactful

The above key messages have been crucial in transforming the nursing profession in the

three critical areas of practice, training and education, leadership, and the nursing workforce's

development.

Transforming Nursing Practice

Message 1: A nurse should practice fully to the maximum extent of their training and education.

To ensure that every American citizen accesses better quality healthcare services and that

nurses' unique contributions are maximized, the state and federal actions are essential in updating

and standardizing regulations of scope-of-practice to get the maximum benefit from the

education and full capacity of APRNs. Insurance companies and states must give patients a

chance to choose their desired healthcare services from a pool of providers that meet their

different needs.

Transforming Nursing Education

Message 2: A nurse should strive to attain the highest level of training and education by going

through an enhanced education system that makes it possible for achieving a seamless

progression of education.

The changes in the healthcare system in the U.S. depend on changing the practice

environment that makes it possible to better the quality of education for nurses before and after

they have been licensed. Improving the quality of teaching ensures that today's and tomorrow's

nurses' groups can deliver better quality, safe, and patient-centered care in all settings, including

primary care settings and public and community health, among others.

Transforming Nurse Leadership

Message 3: A nurse should be a full partner with other health professionals, including the

physicians in the process of health redesigning in the United States.

Strong leadership skills from the nurses is highly required in the strengthening of the

United States healthcare. A transformed system of health ensures that nurses get a chance to

adapt to new settings later during their role of leading those under them. Nurses' role as leaders is

crucial in the service delivery to the patients since they are in close contact with the patients most

of the time (Promoting Nursing Leadership, 2019).

Bettering Data Regarding Healthcare Workforce

Message 4: Effective policy-making and planning of the workforce need efficient data collection

to be undertaken and improved infrastructure of information.

IOM REPORT 5

Messages 1, 2, and 3 above talks about the transformation of the nursing profession. A set

of data needs to be collected, analyzed, and conclusions be made to do this transformation. These

conclusions can only be made by applying high quality and reliable data that correctly outlines

the different needs of the healthcare workforce at the moment and in the future.

Role of Action Coalition

Action coalitions in the United States government come from the three levels: local, state,

and federal-based coalitions. State-based coalitions are assigned the roles of advancing the IOM

report goals at the state level. Each state must make sure that they attain this role in ensuring the

healthcare sector as a whole is offered about the IOM report's goals in leading change and

advancing health.

State-based coalitions are bodies of different collaborators that act as watchdogs to ensure

that nursing practice utilizes all their capabilities to maximize the quality of health at the state

level. They form a solid framework of individuals coming from the national organizations and

states who work together to ensure that maintenance and advancement of health are attained.

State-based Action Coalitions having panel leaders, co-leaders, and members hold discussions of

how various states are collaborating to make sure that IOM recommendations are implemented

to serve these individual states' unique needs.

Progress Report of Florida State on Promoting Nursing Leadership

Florida believes that for America to be healthy, nurses have a crucial role of leadership to

play and hence the need for them to fill up the leadership positions.

State’s Progress

IOM REPORT 6

The Florida Action Coalition (FL-AC) has been working on a number of initiatives to

advance the future of nursing as outlined in the IOM report. The two major ones are lobbying for

laws to better healthcare and carrying out reward systems for the members and stakeholders that

show exemplary work in advancing the future of nursing.

Legislative Efforts

After years of deliberation, the FL-AC has had the House and Senate of the state pass a

healthcare bill that significantly improves the quality of health among 21.5 million residents with

enhanced access to care. This is just one of the many initiatives that the state is carrying out to

ensure that the future of nursing is advanced in Florida.

Employee Reward System

The FL-AC carries out a reward system to ensure that stakeholders that show exemplary

work ethics and performance are appreciated for their efforts. The program advances nurse

leadership by identifying the individual nurses that are giving their best and enjoying them.

The two initiatives by the state of Florida advance the goals specified in the IOM report

in that they are all intended to enhance nursing profession. In terms of legislation, the initiative

ensures that the goals are advanced by creating a favorable environment through which nurses

can deliver their services to the beneficiaries. The stakeholders' reward system encourages them

to work harder to attain the goals of quality healthcare services provision to the patients.

Barriers to advancement in Florida

Despite the progress at the state level, Florida currently faces a major barrier to the

tasked with advancing the future of nursing based on the IOM report provisions. If these teams

of stakeholders could be coordinated well, good progress would be achieved a far as nursing’s

future is concerned. Some of the time, financial challenges can result in half-completed

initiatives in bettering the future of nursing.

Conclusion

In summary, the future of nursing depends on the effort being elicited by the concerned

stakeholders at the present time. Aggressive efforts such as the IOM report by the RWJF

committee shape the future of nursing to the right direction by outlining the needed efforts by the

necessary stakeholders in nursing and healthcare as a whole.
