SOC-449 Basic Direct Practice and Cultural Bias Worksheet It is imperative that social workers connect with a client through various practice skills. There are many “dos” and don’ts” based on cultural differences. It is important to be aware of those differences. This assignment will help you develop this skill:

Watch one of the following videos: “Hanging with Hailey,” “Getting Back to Shakopee,” or “How Can I Help?” located in the Topic 2 folder in MindTap.

Next, evaluate the case manager’s direct practice skills by using the Assessing Verbal Barriers to Communication and Assessing Physical Attending Behaviors table in 7.5 section of Chapter 7 in the textbook.

Use your findings to answer the following essay questions. Cite two scholarly sources, including the textbook, to support your answers.

Turn in the completed assignment by the end of Topic 2.

After using the Assessing Verbal Barriers to Communication and Assessing Physical Attending Behaviors table in 7.5 section of Chapter 7 in the textbook to evaluate the case manager in the video you watched, what was the overall ranking of the verbal barriers to communication? Explain your conclusions. (100-150 words)

Overall, I believe communication was present in the video Hanging with Hailey, and she did an excellent job of ensuring the patient's comfort. She was asking pertinent questions and attempting to gain the patients' trust. Throughout the video, as she asks the patient questions and responds to the question about her goals, Hailey offers her a way to contact her so that she can assist the patient in finding work. When the subject of the patient's friends and the fact that she is estranged from her family is brought up, she empathizes with her patient. Hailey makes direct eye contact, but she fidgets with her fingers and can be stiff at times. (Lunenburg, F. C. 2010).

Explain any verbal or nonverbal barriers to communication in the video you watched. How would you work to avoid any barriers to communication? (100-150 words)

The video showed communication barriers. Hailey would occasionally begin a question, then stop and ask another. The questions Hailey posed, on the other hand, were relevant to the conversation and the topics the patient would bring up. When it came to nonverbal communication, Hailey maintained eye contact and spoke in a soft, understanding tone of voice. Hailey was stiff at times and would look up at the roof when she asked a question, but she did a good job of maintaining eye contact with her patient. She fidgeted with her fingers

What was the overall ranking of the physical attending behaviors? Explain your conclusions. (100-150 words)

Overall, I gave the social worker a 36 out of 48 because she fidgeted with her fingers on occasion. She was stiff at times near the end, but as the video progressed, she became more relaxed. She stayed at eye level with the patient, which is a good thing because we don't want the patient to feel as if we're staring them down. When the patient talks about how she doesn't have a close relationship with her family, doesn't have any friends, or how her father died, she doesn't show any emotion. Although she acknowledges it and expresses her condolences, her tone of voice remains unchanged. (Hepworth at all, 2016)

Describe any cultural differences in the video you watched. (100-150 words)

The patient in the video is from Korea, and she moved to the United States when she was ten years old. The patient goes on to say that she didn't speak English when she first arrived in the United States and that it was difficult for her to make friends because she was the only Asian in her previous school. Because he was Asian, the patient was bullied and labeled as a "communist." Because she is an American, the social worker is unable to relate to her because she does not share the same experiences and problems as the patient. (Hepworth at all, 2016)

Propose some culturally informed interview techniques. (150-200 words)

Some culturally informed interview techniques, in my opinion, would include pairing the patient with someone of the same ethnicity or race. If that isn't possible, I would recommend avoiding using humor in this situation. Because Hailey is unaware of her cultural background and this is their first meeting, it is critical that what is said and how it is said be cautious. As a case manager or social worker, we must work hard to gain the trust of our patients. Taking turns communicating is another strategy I would recommend. This allows the conversation to flow more easily and allows you to repeat some of what they're saying to ensure that they're understood and that you understand what they're saying. This helps to avoid misunderstandings. You have the opportunity to ask questions and make the patient feel as if you are paying attention by taking turns speaking, resulting in a stronger bond with the client.
