Aft er reviewing several peer-reviewed art icles and researching, t here are variet ies of

means of approaching quest ions of behavior t hat have been developed by human

beings. These means t end t o address social behaviors of human beings, and t hey

include laws, morals, et hics, and religious beliefs. Laws are syst ems of rules of

conduct t hat are est ablished by t he government t hat guides t he behavior of humans

in accordance wit h t he societ y, values, est ablished legal obligat ions and right s of

which mandat ory abidance is provided when it is required by t he coercive force of t he

government . Morals represent s beliefs about t he good and bad, just and unjust , right

and wrong t hat include t heories, principles, rules, values, and judgment s. Et hics are

moral principles t hat govern behavior of an individual and are based on ideas of what is

morally bad and good. While, religion is t he belief in t he exist ence of superior beings

exercising power over humans by volit ion imposing rules of conduct wit h fut ure

punishment s and rewards. The purpose of t his paper is t o cont rast t he four ext ernal

forces t hat st rongly influence t he behavior of humans and t o explain how t hey

influence individuals’ behavior. These forces include: et hics, morals, laws, and religious

beliefs. Current research and reviews of lit erat ure suggest s t hat t here are similarit ies

and differences bet ween et hics, morals, laws, and religious beliefs which influence t he

behavior of human beings. The purpose of t his paper is t o cont rast t he four ext ernal

forces t hat st rongly influence t he behavior of humans and t o explain how t hey

influence individuals’ behavior. These forces include: et hics, morals, laws, and religious

beliefs.

Current research and reviews of lit erat ure suggest s t hat t he et hics, morals, laws, and

religious beliefs are closely relat ed, but t hey are also different in various aspect s, and

t hey influence t he behavior of human beings.

Laws, morals, et hics, and religious beliefs all have similarit ies and t hings in common.

The first similarit y bet ween t he et hics, law, morals, and religious beliefs is t heir role of

at t empt ing t o make human beings behave in part icular ways. These forces provide

formal guidance t o human beings in how t o carry out t heir affairs. Laws are

government ’s polit ical t ools and t end t o be fairly rigid. The religious beliefs can st em

from t he exist ing doct rines or personal revelat ions, and t hey provide st rict rules t hat

guide t he behavior of humans. Et hics are approaches used t o arrive at morals, while

morals are t he decisions of just and unjust , right and wrong, good and evil. All t hese

forces provide rules for t he behavior of human beings. Hence, t he similarit ies of all t he

four ext ernal forces are in t heir role of providing rules for human beings t o follow as

part s of t heir inst it ut ions.

Our beliefs as humans are affect ed by t hese four ext ernal forces which defines who

we are and what we believe. These forces are syst ems which maint ain a set of moral

values and prevent humans from violat ing t hose values. They all provide humans wit h

guidelines of what t hey can do or t hey cannot do in some sit uat ions. All t he four

ext ernal forces cont ribut e t o what people t hink is morally good or bad. For inst ance,

religion may creat e a barrier t o what ext ent an individual can do somet hing; some

religious set guidelines and rules limit s what humans do. In t he same way, laws, morals

and et hics cont ribut es t o t he decisions made by humans. They aim at making humans

benefit from being members of a societ y t hat is well-regulat ed.

There are differences bet ween t he four ext ernal forces t hat affect t he behavior of

humans. The first difference comes in line wit h t he official power t o make judgment s

and decisions. Researchers argue t hat religion, morals, and et hics have jurisdict ion

over t he privat e life of an individual, while laws have no jurisdict ions over t he privat e

life of a person. For inst ance, t he law cannot dict at e t o an alcoholic on what t o do wit h

his/her life, t he individual can cont inue drinking alcohol t he way he/she want s. However,

t he alcoholic can be excluded from t he embrace of t he societ y and et hical police.

Besides, t he religious convict ions are based on t he commands of a perceived

superpower. On t he ot her hand, et hics and morals are linked t o overarching societ al

guidelines. While laws are based on t he rules and regulat ions laid down by t he

government as a way of cont rolling t he behavior of people. For example, in t he Unit ed

St at es, it is normal for individuals t o eat fried pig. However, for a Muslims eat ing a pig

is breaking fait h as it is against t heir religion.

Moreover, in a west ern syst em of governance, t he difference bet ween t he four

ext ernal forces is t hat laws are enforced by t he st at e. For example, religious people

usually believe t hat drinking alcohol is a sin; however, an individual can quiet ly sit at

home and t ake alcohol wit hout t he police officers int erfering wit h his business. Some

people will respond t o his drinking as immoral and unreligious, but t he government

cannot legislat e moralit y. The law wait s unt il t he t ime t he drunker t hreat ens t he

safet y of t he public. The alcoholic is free from prosecut ion under t he law unless

he/she dest roys ot her people’s propert ies.

Furt hermore, morals and et hics comes from t he humans awareness of what is right

and wrong , while laws and religions are writ t en and approved by t he government s and

t he people guided by superpower respect ively. Et hics and morals as well as religions

are likely t o vary from individuals as different persons may have opinions and beliefs

concerning cert ain issues, but laws clearly describe what is illegal no mat t er how

people argue.

Religious beliefs limit s freedom as t hey cont rols people’s act ions wit h a set of

guidelines and rules, rest rict ing t he capabilit y of fait hful followers. These rules and

guidelines can be perceived negat ively or posit ively, but t hey cert ainly have t he

power t o make some human beings t o set course in a part icular pat h. For example,

Muslims are commanded not t o eat pork or drink alcohol; t his prevent s t hem from

associat ing wit h alcohol and pigs.

Laws, religious beliefs, morals and et hics impact s behavior of human beings in every

aspect of t heir lives by having t o live by t hose rules, morals and codes. For example it

is implant ed in people’s brain t hat religion is how t hey t hink, how t hey choose, and

how t hey act . Human beings seek God’s guidance whenever t hey are in t roubles t hat

exceed t heir capabilit ies. Religions influence t he behavior of people by at t empt ing t o

influence humans’ lives t o believe t hey hold no significant personal power.

Et hics and morals influence t he behavior of human beings by helping t hem t o make

informed judgment s and decisions and affect t he way people relat e t o each ot her.

Normally, people make judgment s and decisions based on various fact ors, which

include t heir own morals, religion beliefs, and et hics. For inst ance, when an individual

believes t hat it ’s an unet hical t o achieve success in a part icular way, t he person is

likely t o avoid using t hat way of solving t hings. Et hics and moral values ensure t hat

individuals provide t he best services t o t heir client s while ensuring t hat t he

organizat ion cult ivat es account abilit y cult ure.

Religious beliefs, laws, et hics and moral values influences t he behavior of humans by

providing a set of pot ent ial consequences for t heir act ions t hat individuals consider in

deciding how t o behave in cert ain sit uat ions. They influence humans’ psychology by

providing cert ain ideas of wrong and right , about what is required for an individual t o

be considered guilt y of a crime, and about how t he punishment needs t o be met ed

out . This affect s how people make judgment s and decisions in cert ain sit uat ions.

Laws are t he cult ural forces t hat have a vit al social funct ion of cont rolling, conduct ing

wit h t he law. Therefore, laws play a role of shaping t he posit ive behavior in t he

societ y.

In conclusion, laws, et hics, morals and religious beliefs are closely relat ed since t he

est ablishment of laws is done wit h t he help of t he religious beliefs, et hics and moral

values; however, t he four ext ernal forces are also different from various aspect s. The

morals and et hics comes from t he humans awareness of what is right and wrong ,

while laws and religions are writ t en and approved by t he government s and t he
