DEVELOPMENT ASSESSMENT

DEVELOPMENT ASSESSMENT 3

Choose a child between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. Identify the age of the child and

describe the typical developmental stages of children that age.

AB is aged 10 years. Human development can be classified into eight stages and this child

fits in the industry vs. inferiority stage (Syed, & McLean, 2017). In this category, competency is

the primary virtue. The child, therefore, should be assessed about his ability to read and write. At

his age, he is expected to have cognitive skills such as doing simple sum. At his age, the peer group

is very crucial; it helps individuals gain self-esteem. The realm o social interaction that is based

on family has decreased at this stage and friends and classmates play a very big role in the progress

of the child.

Applying developmental theory based on Erickson, Piaget, or Kohlberg, explain how you

would developmentally assess the child. Include how you would offer explanations during

the assessment, strategies you would use to gain cooperation, and potential findings from the

assessment.

An assessment is very crucial; it helps a chance for both the parent and the care providers

to see how they can together support for the child. Erik's psychology theory can assist in

determining the expectation of a child at their specific ages. For gaining cooperation, it is essential

that during the assessment, AB is accompanied by one of his best friends. This is simply because

at this stage the peer group is very crucial; it helps individuals gain self-esteem (Syed, & McLean,

Compare the physical assessments among school-aged children. Describe how you would

modify assessment techniques to match the age and developmental stage of the child.

Child development assessment is processes that involve obtaining primary data about the

growth and development of a child and ascertain if the child is meeting the typical development

milestone (Aparecida Munhoz Gaíva, et al., 2018). Children who are aged between five and twelve

years are in different development stages which may be affected by their environment. Children

who are at these ages have already started schooling and thus they have the same environment that

may shape their development. One of the very crucial techniques in this assessment is observation.

This is where the care provider interacts with the child and draws conclusions depending on how

the child behaves. Another critical aspect of considering is parent rating and care provide a score,

standardized tests, and portfolios, all of which can best be applied for different ages. The

techniques may even be modified to fit the age of the patient. For instance, it may require that a

care provider reads out the standardized tests for a five-year-old and fill in the answers for them

while, on the other hand, a twelve-year-old patient will read and fill in the answers for themselves.

All these must be assessed basing on the age of the child. Children at the ages of 5 to 8 years have

less physical coordination compared to the children who are between the ages of 10 to 12.

Therefore, the assessment technique should be modified depending on the physical milestone,

social and cognitive milestone of every child. The age difference presents varying development

milestone which therefore calls for the need of assessing every child depending on their age.

2017). Social interactions according to this theory help the children at this stage to gain a sense of

pride. The children who seem to be struggling need to be supported by both their parents and their

teachers. This will help them in overcoming the difficulties that they face and building a sense of

mastery. If the children lack this support, at this stage, it will difficult for them moving to the next

stage.
